Found the communication department to of great interest to my daughter. Unfortunately I will not encourage her to go to this school due to the lack of security and the faculties seemingly lack of concern when asked any questions about security. I was told that the school handles all the campus incidents. i would prefer a school that is interested in preventing them as well. No security even present at open house to talk to. Those adults that work for the school that did talk to me about security when asked, gave me the " well it is college". No adult presence in any dorms, no monitoring at the doors, (only cameras), no curfew, no real dorm checks for alcohol or parties etc. Seemed very unsafe. Wish I knew this before the three hour trip that was made.

IUP is a very good school, it is very diversified. It gives you the chance to form lifelong friendship with people from other countries. Also has a very good international department. I love it and I'm glad I made the decision to attend this university.

Academics

Most professors are very good and also entertaining. Which makes it comfortable for teacher and student. Most classes are sized appropriately and if not (lectured classes), most classwork is done on the computer.

College Life

A lot of Greek organizations, however the African American sororities and fraternities are not very active. Weekend starts Thursday and end Sunday. The basketball and football teams are not that great but the games are always crowded. It is a very friendly campus for the most part.

Overall

IUP is a reasonably priced school with reasonable accommodations. I'm not incredibly impressed with it nor am I disappointed. If there is one thing I wish I knew before I came here it is how expensive everything is and how impractical and inconvenient the money system here is for students. You have at least three or four different accounts to use for different things and sometimes it costs money to add to those accounts, laundry for example, which seems a little greedy to charge an extra fee for something you are already paying for. Also, almost everything in the food courts either costs extra or doesn't fit on the meal plan so you are forced to constantly use your flex (auxiliary account) for the remaining costs. All in all my experiences here have been generally mild. I don't hate it or love it. But then again I don't take full advantage of most of the facilities, so I'm just telling you what I know about.

Academics

IUP does offer a broad range off courses although not a lot of them are practical. For instance, the film program offers only an informative course and not a "how to" course of how to actually make films. That said, most of the professors are personable and will talk or meet with you when they are available and will usually help you any way they can. As for the workload, it is not as sizable as one might think. The "writing intensive" courses would be considered mild and reasonable to the ordinary student unless it is addressed as otherwise. Oh, and most of the non-lecture courses are small enough to maintain a sociable relationship with professors or classmates.

College Life

There's nothing particularly outstanding about the campus, besides maybe the Oak Grove. The atmosphere is generally dull and looks a lot like it does on the commercial; everything is beige, concrete and very plain. Clubs don't seem to last very long or be very exciting or eventful. Off campus however is a quaint little town with many interesting little shops and restaurants to try out. Campus safety seems to be more worried about busting kids who are drunk and/or committing minor offenses than maintaining a level of safety among students who might be in real danger. They mostly sit in the parking lot talking to each other while frat guys yell and throw things at people in the street without any sort of consequence. Weekend activities are pretty much up to you. Either make friends or you'll find yourself decorating door stops on friday night with the CA's/RA's of your building. If you' happen to be twenty one or older you have ample bars to go to and have a good time. But watch out for cops, because they are especially on the prowl for college kid blood. Unless you're in a fraternity of course.

Overall

I think the school is wonderful. I have visited many colleges before, but this one really coight my eye. I love all the sports they offer. The campus has a very friendly feel to it. The campus as well as the nearby town are beautiful. Classes are a perfect size, and the people are nice. I couldn't ask for more!

Academics

The class size I was told is about 25-30 kids Not 100 or so npt like others. IUP is famous for their criminiology program. I hope to study culinary arts. Professors real.ly care. they care about the well-being of a student. their grade is not just a number, its a sign. i really like that at this school.

College Life

Everythin on campus was beautiful. Everyone was nice and well manored. I feel as though i would fit right in! The are lots of clubs and not much partying on the weekends which is great because i can really focus on my work! There are security buttons all over campus. press one and help is 2 min away! i feel safe on campus and that really relieves my parents as well as me!
