There are plenty of trade schools out there, but few with academics as unique and specific as the Colorado School of Trades. The school focuses exclusively on gunsmithing, and features an associate of occupational studies degree in that trade.
The AOS in Gunsmithing consists of four courses:
*Basic Skills (250 hours)
*Machine Use (400 hours)
*Stockmaking (350 hours)
*Design & Function (at least 800 hours)
By the time you complete the program you’ll have a full understanding of the trade, from shop safety to diagnosing and repairing firearms. Because of the hands-on nature of the profession, the curriculum is based mainly on practical experience. Of the 1800 total hours required for the program, 1500 are spent in the shop and lab.
Admissions requirements to the Colorado School of Trades include a high school diploma or GED and the physical ability to perform the required shop work. You must also be at least 21 years and pass a background check.
The school participates in federal financial aid programs like Pell grants, Stafford loans and VA benefits. All of these programs are need-based, so you must fill out the FAFSA and demonstrate need to be eligible.
