City of Hope’s Irell and Manella Graduate School offers a research-based doctorate degree in Biological Sciences. Located in Duarte, California, just outside Los Angeles, the program prepares students to work in a variety of capacities. Irell and Manella’s tuition waiver program also makes it the most affordable school one could choose.
Academics are rigorous and include a substantial research component. Students choose a research specialization. Some examples of these specializations are:
- Cancer biology
- Diabetes research
- DNA research
- Molecular pharmacology
Graduates of Irell and Manella’s program are prepared for employment in medical, academic, and industrial research. Since the school is located outside of a major city, graduates have access to substantial employment opportunities.
Students also participate in Journal Clubs, which are groups that regularly present their research findings within their specific area. Other college life activities include regularly held scientific lectures.
Admissions applications are available on the Irell and Manella website. Applicants will also need to submit transcripts or GRE scores and three letters of recommendation. Applicants must also have completed certain pre-requisite courses in the sciences.
All accepted students receive a fellowship, which covers the full cost of tuition. The fellowship also helps to cover living expenses. All accepted students receive full medical coverage, as well.
