Allegheny College is a place unlike any other. The college community is built around academics and togetherness. In classes, every professor knows your name, and wants to develop a relationship with every student in order to help them grow and prosper as a student learner. Having such a committed, motivated and inspiring faculty has made my college experience priceless. As for the student body, we are a united group of learners. You will notice this from just one visit on campus. Students are conversing after class about the topics they discussed that day, everyone greets each other by name as they pass on the brick sidewalks, and you feel the sense of community that is unlike any other campus. Allegheny College is committed to helping its students grow and develop into the person they were destined to be through it's commitment to academics and creativity.

Academics

Degrees from Allegheny College are respected more than a degree from a state college. This is because of Allegheny's reputation for academic rigor. The classes are very challenging and will push every student out of their comfort zone, but that is what makes Allegheny so special. The professors encourage you to go deeper and explore the text further than you would in any other academic institution. Professors demand that you put your best effort into every single assignment, and participate in class everyday. So yes, the work load is demanding and grueling at times, but it is worth it. Also, there is an amazing support system. The library houses the Learning Commons, which is a center full of brilliant tutors and counselors that will help you with calculous or help you work out a plan to manage your time if you feel overwhelmed. The work is hard, but there are people everywhere, literally everywhere, that will help you succeed.

College Life

While Allegheny is a really small school, there is always something to do! For example, "GAP," Gator Activities Programming always has exciting activities for students to do. Such as, Concerts, Movies on the Quad, Wing Fest, Spring Fest, Touring Comedians, and many more. Allegheny's Greek Life is always putting on events, most of them for charity, that are very fun and gets the majority of the student body involved. Some examples of Greek Events are, highlighter dance parties, Greek Sing, Man of the Year, Students Against Multiple Sclerosis Dance competition, and end of the year picnics. Allegheny has a wide variety of sports teams such as football, basketball, soccer, swimming, track, lacrosse, tennis, golf, and many more. Regardless of what activities you decide to participate in, you can be sure that you will be safe. Allegheny's campus safety is always working to make sure our student's are safe. Allegheny is a great place to learn but also a great place to have fun and make lasting friendships!

Allegheny is a wonderful place where you will meet people from all walks of life. You won't find any snobby or malicious souls on this campus. It is a great place for someone who doesn't mind the cold, has a love for grass and trees and doesn't like to walk very far.

Academics

Allegheny is filled with kind, humble and courteous people from all walks of life. Coming from New York City I was scared I would have trouble finding people I can relate to, but I've learned to feel close to those I may not have much in common with simply because they are good people. The small intimate class sizes at Allegheny allow for wonderful discussions similar to what I experienced in my high school, making me feel at home in the academic realm. Teachers really reach out to the students, and you can tell they're not just concerned with a grade, they actually want you to learn and they want to form good professional relationships with their students.

College Life

"We're all in this together" seems to be the motto for the social atmosphere at Allegheny. There are countless clubs and organizations that anyone could be a part of, and that often join forces to make cool things happen on campus. Campus Security's only concern is safety. They are not out to get anyone as long as no one's in danger. There's always something fun to do on campus, like ice-cream making, film showcases, plays performed and written by students, and much more.

What I like most about this school is the feel of community that I have being here. We are a very small school and therefore most students live on or very close to campus. With the dorms, academic buildings, and facilities being close together you feel very connected to one another even if you aren't friends with everyone. For prospective students, I would advise them to visit all the schools they are planning on attending before they choose where to go. My most memorable experience was before I was even a student here. For a Trustee Weekend, I stayed with a current student here and after that night I knew this is where I wanted to be. I loved everything I saw and I just had that feeling of belonging. I urge every prospective student to search for that same feeling I felt.

Academics

Allegheny College is known for having a vigorous academic program regardless of what discipline a student may be studying. Although my homework and studying keeps me extremely busy, I have never felt too overwhelmed with the work load because I plan and organize my schedule very well. I enjoy being able to have most of my classes during the day, and not having any night classes, and my professors are so amazing. I have a personal relationship with many of them and feel comfortable stopping by their office hours for help on homework or even just to have a short chat. I also love that many of my professors know me personally instead of just memorizing my name and where I may sit in class. My class size for the majority is fairly small. I think the smaller the class the more you get out of it, and I am happy to say that I have only had one large class here, and the rest of them have been under 30 people.

College Life

The social atmosphere at Allegheny is always positive. Our athletic groups may not be the best or win all the time however there is generally a good turnout of students to support and cheer each team on regardless of their record. Along with the athletics, we have a huge amount of clubs and organizations that everyone can join and it is extremely easy to join each one. I am a member of a couple clubs and I am really enjoying them. Lastly, for safety on campus, I feel secure and safe walking around at all times. There are security guards that are often found around campus and because campus is so small and close-knit, any outside intruders seem to be fairly unlikely.

Allegheny College is a great college to attend and I'm very glad that I chose to attend it. My favorite part about the campus is the familiarity among students and professors. I see people I know every day (whether in class or in passing) and the sense of closeness that this college provides trumps "big-campus life" any day. I like knowing who I'm talking to and who I'm seeing, and the fact that professors will recognize you and talk to you outside of class is really amazing. It makes the campus seem like a huge family.

Academics

I'm in the biology program and the classes are relatively large (around 50 students per class) in the intro science courses. Regardless of the large number of students in these particular classes, the professors all seem to learn your name very quickly which is very impressive. The professors are also extremely helpful in office hours, something that Allegheny requires for the professors that really helps out students who don't understand the material right away. The workload is intense, with an average of 5 hours of homework per night, but it really helps me understand the material and I feel extremely prepared to handle the workload required by grad schools.

College Life

The social atmosphere is decent here, there's not many parties that usually happen. There might be one or two parties on a Saturday night, but nothing spectacular. The programming committee, GAP, provides entertainment for students every weekend so there's always something to do on campus, especially since there's not too much to do in Meadville. The clubs are very active on campus and the athletics aren't too bad here. The best part about the campus is the campus safety. Not once have I ever felt in danger on this campus, mainly due to the availability of campus security.

Overall I enjoy attending Allegheny. The campus is gorgeous and small. The food is actually pretty good and everyone at the college is super friendly and accepting of everyone else. My only really memorable story about my first semester was when I totaled my car on the interstate. I commute to Allegheny, which is in Meadville, from Erie. A couple of days after the first snow storm of the year, the highways had some slush and ice. Unfortunately, I spun on the ice and slush and flipped my car off the side of the highway. Because of that all my test grades and such tanked and getting to school was tough. I also had some problems sleeping. But all that aside, my professors were all super supportive and helped me not fail even though I wasn't always making it to class. I missed a lab and a couple lectures the day of the crash and so, even though it is unorthodox, I was allowed to make up the lab at a later date. And in the two to three week period directly after my crash, like I said before, I did fairly terrible on some tests and quizzes, barely passing them. However, since all my professors have an abundance of office hours I was able to make appointments and pass all of my classes with two B minuses, a B, a B plus, and a C plus. Granted these grades aren't that great, without my professors I probably would have failed at least one of classes.

Academics

So at Allegheny we take Seminars instead of Gen. Ed. courses. And my first Seminar was Philosophy of Mathematics. I didn't have a choice because it was the only one that fit in my schedule. However, the professor for my class is probably my favorite professor/teacher I have ever had. He was so cynically hilarious and supportive of all of the students in his class. I also had the oldest professor as my German professor, or at least he thought he was the oldest professor. He had a ton of fun stories and comments about his senility and life in Germany. My classes were always a pretty small size, never more than fifty people, and the larger classes were the hard sciences like Physics and Chemistry where different lab sections had the same lecture.

College Life

The only club I've attended was chess club and it was fun. Other than that commuting made it nearly impossible to stay for anything else. I also played intramural soccer and it was extremely well organized and a lot of fun.

I think that Allegheny is was one of the greatest places on earth for those who have a true thirst for knowledge. you are indeed challenged by Professor's to think out of the box and to go above and beyond what would normally be asked of you. But what truly makes this school great is the minds one is surrounded by. Not only are your classmates from all walks of life but, all concepts of the mind, everyone is an individual at the school and your ideas there can be different and you can agree to disagree. I think that is what i like most about my school, is that i am my own person and so is everyone around me, and for that I am not looked down upon but rather prized for it, and i pride the people around me for it as well, and am glad that, that is the type of people Allegheny chose to bring together.

Academics

Through small class sizes, I am not a number or a last name to be read off of a list during attendance. I am a person. professors take interest in who i am and what i am up to even after i have finished with their class. Also I take pride in knowing that my professors have had great experience and use all of their knowledge to help me prepare for a job and world that has not been made yet.

College Life

It is a small college and therefore can be seen as a slower pace of life. But there is a lot of good to be taken from that. the serenity and beauty of the campus. The gardens paths and benches allow you to take it all in

Allegheny offers challenging courses, and allows students to connect with professors because of the small class size. Greek life on campus is something to really get involved in, even though it gets a bad reputation in the world due to the "party scene." You do not have to party to be in many fraternities/sororities, instead engaging in community with your brothers/sisters, and getting to know many different people you may have never talked to. Also, Greek Life on campus does a lot for the community of Meadville through social projects, and volunteers a ton of time on campus!

Academics

Challenging, but worth it. You will learn how to write! I love that you do not have to decide on a major till relatively late because I would not have explored the many different courses Allegheny has to offer if I chose to go somewhere else!

College Life

The social atmosphere is laid-back and it is very easy to make friends. All of the faculty is very helpful. Campus security is also very helpful and will answer any questions you have about parking, rules in the room, etc. Like many colleges, if you do illegal things you are going to get in trouble with campus security if you are not respectful. They are fair on every account I have heard of thus far. Organizations are very easy to become included in, you just have to attend their meetings. Allegheny can improve on school spirit, especially at athletic events.

I love Allegheny College. They have a lot to offer and have great academics. The extracurricular activities are great and easy to participate in. The college life is definitely workable and fun. The small classes and college life is great. You need to work hard to achieve here though.

Academics

The workload is a little high but very manageable. Most professors are very helpful and understanding. The class size is my favorite part of Allegheny; there is about 25 students per class. Depending on your major, Allegheny has a program which helps you follow the track you want to get to your final major or job.

College Life

There is a decent amount of activities to get involved with while attending Allegheny. The school provides non-alcoholic activities every friday and saturday night. This is very helpful for students. The non-varsity sports are a great way to interact with other students and stay active while being able to handle the school work and sporting activities.

Allegheny was my first choice. Since the day I arrived it has been everything I hoped. The people are so nice, the professors are very helpful and the campus is beautiful. I love being here. It has been easy to get involved. I can always find something to do and if someone is bored it is because they choose to be. I have been able to get help whenever I need it for anything I need. I would encourage any new student to join something -- a club, activity, or sport--right away. It really helps to meet people.

Academics

There is more work than I anticipated in some courses while others have hardly any. I am really appreciative of the class size and find it easy to get help from professors when I need it. I enjoy my dance minor and have found everyone in the department helpful in so mant ways. I have just started classes in my major--neuroscience--but hava already found lots of opportunities for independent study and more involvement. If you ask a question or have a request, professors really try to make things happne for you.

College Life

I love going ot Rugby games. I had never even seen a Rugby match prior to coming to Allegheny and now I go to every game. I have many friends in sororities and fraternities and, even though I did not join, I am always welcome at their events and so not feel they are an exclusive group. I have been to several club meetings when I was searching for what to join and found all of them interesting and welcoming. I joined the dance group--orchesis, and loved being a part of this and look forward to dancing with them again next fall. I also have found some great volunteer opportunities and have been able to help out on a working pig farm. Although it is not a "party" school, there is plenty to do, all of it fun!
