Academics Rating

Class size at SF State is really overwhelming and questions the University's ability to accommodate students within the classroom. During the first few days of classes, everyone is sitting on the floor and listening from the hall for the professors lectures and instructions.

Academics Rating

I have taken many mind blowing, eye opening classes here. I have, at the same time struggled to crash (show up one the first day when your not enrolled in a desperate attempt to add a class to your roster) numerous pre-requisite and general ed courses that only have 20 seats when hundreds of students need to take them to graduate. My favorite classes have been: Science and Spirituality of Africa, which taught me that the BLACK Egyptians invented and perfected astronomy, algebra, geometry, medicine, literature and poetry thousands of years before the Greeks and Romans were even reading. English 214 emphasis on Erotic literature. Part of our curriculum was to read the Craig's List "Casual Encounters" ads (if you've never heard of them, you should go look some up, they're hilarious!) and we read numerous twisted, exciting, excerpts from books such as The Piano Teacher by Michael Haneke. We learned about power struggles in relationships and how often roll reversing will make people go nuts. And lastly I deeply loved my Drawing 1 class. I'm a fashion design major, so the school requires me to take this class before I can take my normal Design courses, BUT SAN FRANCISCO STATE ONLY OFFERS ONE DRAWING CLASS PER SEMESTER (if that) and I know that Interior Design, Fine Arts, Print making and Graphic design students all need this course too. I showed up and there was no space for me, so I continued coming to every class until someone finally dropped and there was an open spot. Also this class accepts Fine Arts students before anyone else, so it's full of first time freshmen when seniors still need to take it to graduate. The school expects us to have taken drawing 1 at a community college in addition to going to school at State. This is ridiculous and I'm the only person I know who didn't have to take Drawing 1 at another school. Anyways, my art class was very labor intensive, but extremely fulfilling. Our final project was to create an interactive, political art piece and display it on campus somewhere. I made a dress out of my sketches from that class and placed in onto a life sized Barbie Doll. She was suspended from a rope attached to two windows on opposite sides of this walkway. I left scissors on the floor and placed a message across all the windows on a giant wall of our campus housing. The message read "You dare cut our education short!" and with chalk on the ground I wrote explaining the situation with the school's 1 drawing class and how absurdly our money is spent (for example on our prize winning lawn and gardens). I got huge school wide press coverage and everyone came up and talked to me about their hardships in getting into classes. It was amazing.
