About Catholic Theological Union at Chicago

Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, Illinois, is the largest graduate-level Catholic ministerial school in the United States, attracting students from all over the world to study its unique curriculum.

Catholic Theological Union also offers many opportunities to expand one’s spiritual and religious practice. Students who exhibit exceptional academic performance may also receive one of Catholic Theological Union’s full-tuition scholarships.

In addition to a doctorate of Ministry and a doctorate of Divinity, Catholic Theological Union grants master’s degrees in such concentrations as:

  • Theology
  • Pastoral Studies
  • Hispanic Theology and Ministry
  • Liturgy

The curriculum at Catholic Theological combines hands-on pastoral work with theology and the study of different cultures so that graduates are equipped to minister to cultural groups throughout the world.

Student life at Catholic Theological is intended to enhance build on the curriculum. In addition to prayer and worship groups, students may participate in a Hispanic Ministry, a group dedicated to preaching as well as traveling ministry groups.

Admission requirements include transcripts, an application, a writing sample and letters of recommendation. While a bachelor’s degree is generally required, Catholic Theological does make exceptions, occasionally admitting a certain number of students who do not have a four-year degree.

Approximately five different full-tuition scholarships are awarded to a certain number of Catholic Theological students each year. Based in great part on academic merit, these require a grade point average minimum around 3.2 on average.

Catholic Theological also awards matching grants, whereby a student’s church covers a certain amount of the tuition and Catholic Theological matches that amount.
