About CGU

Claremont Graduate University (CGU) is one of the oldest US schools completely dedicated to graduate study. Located in Claremont, California, CGU is a competitive institution with rigorous academics and a long list of notable alumni. Since CGU is part of The Claremont College system, students also have access to various resources and activities throughout the greater Claremont community.

CGU awards master’s and doctoral programs in such fields as:

  • Cultural Studies
  • English
  • Media
  • Music
  • Philosophy
  • Religion
  • Women’s Studies

Most CGU classes are small and are conducted as intimate group discussions. Many CGU alumni are published authors, successful professors and leaders in such fields as Fine Arts or Journalism.

CGU is part of the seven-college system that includes such schools as Pomona, Pitzer and Harvey Mudd. CGU students therefore also have access to facilities, campus activities and various other opportunities throughout the Claremont system.

The tree-lined Claremont campus is on the outskirts of Claremont’s downtown. The small, charming town of Claremont features cafes, restaurants, bookstores, music festivals, and other attractions to enhance college life. Claremont is also only 35 miles from downtown Los Angeles.

Admissions requirements vary from one academic department to another. General admissions requirements include a CGU application, a personal statement, recommendation letters and transcripts. Certain programs also require GRE scores.

CGU awards institutional scholarships. Students may also apply for loans by filling out a FAFSA. Individual departments may offer fellowships and other financial aid as well.
