Reviews for University of St Thomas, Saint Paul
I am in my third year at the University of St. Thomas, and I could never have expected the depth of my undergraduate academic experience. I came into college with a love of reading and writing, but I was unsure of how that could translate to a college major or experience. Now, I am an English and Communications/Journalism double major with a business minor. I have discovered exciting new opportunities each day through the wonderful mentors I have found in my professors. The English department has consistently pushed me to seek new outlets for analysis, creativity, and expansion, while the COJO department allows me to bring together theories with practical application of skills. Looking back to three years ago, my growth in my knowledge, skills, and critical thought is huge. I owe so much to the people at St. Thomas that have taken me under their wing and allowed me to learn and discover with their guidance.
St.Thomas keeps class sizes low (between 5-20 for my field), but that's not their only strength. The professors truly care about their student and their success, both academically and in other parts of their lives. Almost every professor I have had at St. Thomas has demonstrated his or her personal investment in my interests, goals, hopes, and dreams. I have gained many mentors that are invaluable to my college experience.
Life at St. Thomas is many things--busy, fun-loving, serious, political, athletic, spiritual, social-justice oriented, and so much more. There is something for everyone here. The location is superb, situated in a quiet neighborhood between two bustling city centers. St. Paul is my home away from home.
I have been having the time of my life ever since I first stepped foot on the St. Thomas campus. I have felt like my academic needs have been exceeded and that I have been benefited immensely in the classroom as a result of this. I will always carry fond memories of my time here as long as I live. The welcoming community will always be in my heart.
Academics at St. Thomas are amazing. I am always able to get a hold of my professors if need be to ask questions. I am also comfortable going to the many tutoring resources on campus if I have questions on my homework. The classroom environment is spectacular. The average class being 21 students I really appreciate getting to know my professors as well as my classmates.
The social atmosphere at St. Thomas is very welcoming. I have been able to make all sorts of new friends with different backgrounds and have been able to join a variety of clubs and maintain an active role as a board member on the clubs that I am a part of. There has never been a day that I have felt unsafe on campus and the security officers always have greeted me with a smile and pleasant conversation.
My favorite part about St. Thomas is the community involvement and vibrant campus. Students are friendly and willing to help out. One of my favorite memories was Tommie Ambassador Training before classes started in the fall when we split into teams and had a relay race through the lower quad. We ran through the fountain, ate donuts off of strings, and bonded as an Ambassador community. Those friendships have carried into my second semester, and make interactions with prospective students on tours and overnight visits more rewarding because of the amazing community we built.
The small class sizes at St. Thomas allow for the professors to get to know their students, and help whenever problems arise. Likewise, the smaller setting creates an atmosphere for students to better get to know each other. The workload is manageable, and the majority of professors are understanding about deadlines, and conflicting exam dates.
The social atmosphere on campus was critical in my college search. I wanted to find a campus that "felt right." St. Thomas simply felt right for me, and after two semesters here, I have come to realize that it is the student involvement and friendly atmosphere that attracted me to the campus. I always feel safe on campus, we have the blue light system, and public safety is present as well. Tommie athletics are well attended, and nothing beats the Tommie-Johnnie rivalry. On weekends, STAR puts on numerous events for students, and there are always club meetings during the week.
