Overall
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University was the best choice I could have made when it came to choosing a college. The academics, campus, and sports and other extra-curricular events are at a pristine level.
Academics
The academics is at a perfect balance. I've always struggled with getting everything done when it's due, and for the most part I still do. However, I find time to get everything done still allowing time left over to spend time with friends and go to my job.
College Life
Athletics are at their prime in the fall since Virginia Tech is known for their football. Every weekend is exciting here and it makes you wish that it were fall year round because of all the loving and cheerful atmosphere that comes with it.

Overall
Virginia Tech is a great school. It is big enough (~25,000) that there is something for everyone, while creating a sense of community and belonging like that of a small school. The sense of loyalty and pride that students feel seems (to me) to be unrivaled. In addition to being absorbed by football, autumn in Blacksburg may be as good as it gets. The weather is perfect (a crisp 55 degrees) and set against the beautiful colors of the changing leaves of the Appalachian there is seemingly no place else in the world worth visiting. In fact, Virginia Tech's colors (Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange) were chosen because they so perfectly reflect the colors of campus during that time.
Academics
Overall, the academics at VT are great. I wish there was more emphasis on creativity, especially within the business school, but you will get a thorough and valued education. The engineering and architecture schools are really great, but have very strict standards so prepare to work your tail off. I would also suggest taking a class with Kwame Brown (IDST and African American Studies) as he is immensely passionate and thoroughly versed in his teachings and is able to impart this knowledge in entertaining and powerful way.
College Life
Not to discredit the academics, but this is really the selling point of VT. The atmosphere of campus feels like such a community. I never once felt like an outcast. Even in a campus of 25,000 you see the same faces regularly and, although you don't know their names (we made up names for them), they become parts of your life (read: characters you talk about with your friends). Besides the great campus life, Blacksburg is great. A small college town that is secluded from the outside. Small shops on main street, a historic theater and great hiking/camping all around you. However, just 15 minutes away is Christiansburg, which has malls, movie theaters, a WalMart and the like so you can stay connected and pampered. I can safely say I spent the four of the best years of my life here.

Overall
I look back at my four years at Virginia Tech with great fondness. Blacksburg, where Tech is located, is a terrific college town and everything revolves around Tech. I know the school may be most famous for the shooting that took place back in 2007 but that is an isolated incident and so far from the small town feeling of the University.
Academics
Academics was terrific. Classes were challenging but reasonable. I took classes where there were 600 students and also classes with 10 students. As the name implies, the school is most well known for it's engineering, computer science and other technical majors. However, the curriculum is very well rounded and other programs such as the business school is also well respected.
College Life
Football, football and football. Tech is a football school period. Like I said Tech is located in a small town so if you are looking for the big city life, VA Tech is not for you. Like most school, there is always a party to go to if you look hard enough. I wasn't in a fraternity so cannot comment on Greek life. Suffice it to say, I had a terrific time there.
