Overall

Overall, LBCC is a good school. They are struggling with budget cuts, but I feel like I'm getting what I need. I am in the Honors Program there, which makes things a lot better because honors classes are smaller and generally more fun, in my opinion. The campus is very nice, and construction is almost done on some major improvements.

Academics

Some classes can get pretty crowded, with over 75 students. Luckily though, most classes remain at about 25-50 students. All of the professors I have had have been great, they seem to really care about teaching and are passionate about their subjects.

Campus Facilities & Safety

I have never felt unsafe while on campus. When I take night classes I always carry mase, but that's probably me just being over-cautious. The facilities are great. There is a nice library, computer labs, study areas, and always a friendly atmosphere.

Overall, Long Beach City College is an accessible, affordable, and opportunity filled institution. However, I caution anyone planning to attend who is not particularly self motivated. While the school offers countless opportunities for advancement in almost any field, the size of the study body requires individual students to initiate relationships with staff and offices/departments. If you don't want to get lost in the crowds of eager students, you should take control of creating your college experience, rather than let it be created for you. My favorite dimension to the LBCC experience is the prevalence of older students, most notably on the Pacific Coast Campus. This age diversity provides valuable networking connections and learning opportunities, both inside of class and out. Diversity in general is another positive college attribute; the diversity is equally reflected in the faculty. Take every opportunity for advancement you can while enjoying the community college atmosphere and low tuition fees!

Academics

Academics are designed for student success. Workload tends to stress in-class work and attendance, with respect to percentage of working students. Most professors are understanding and approachable. Class sizes vary, but getting a seat in those classes is usually a desperate battle. Again, I advise you to establish and maintain contact with more than one counselor/adviser. The staff can help you find out if you qualify for early registration, which will help you get necessary classes and stay on track. Due to the high turnover and large student body, you must make sure your teacher knows your name AND that you need help, when you do. They are there to help you, help them help you. Credits are transferable to both UC and CSU, as well as other institutions. Decide early what general path you want to take; graduate school preparation often begins in high school. One professor stands out above the rest in my personal experience: Regina Sterling Spector. She is an adjunct for the Philosophy department who teaches an Introduction to Phil. class, as well as the Non-Western Religion and Philosophy of Religion classes. She is a dynamic educator, a passionate mentor, and an excellent academic adviser and life coach. I encourage students to find and bond with faculty members in departments that you are interested in. By establishing a professional relationship with teachers in your preferred areas of study, you can gain priceless advice on everything from picking courses to career exploration opportunities.

Campus Facilities & Safety

Campus facilities are average, aging, but under remodel. Computer labs are crowded. Parking is also crowded, and hard to find. However, parking is cheap. While the crowd does lend to the feeling of safety, the school usually maintains at least one Long Beach Police Officer on patrol at all times. If taking night classes, secure and reliable means of transportation is recommended. Long Beach Transit runs fairly often and LBCC provides a shuttle between LAC and PCC. Cafeteria is excellent, given the culinary program at LBCC. Designated smoking areas maintain the rights of both smokers and non-smokers. The Liberal Arts Campus is located in a residential area. While safe, the area is lacking sidewalks. There is also a resident bunny population! The Pacific Coast Campus is more centrally located near downtown Long Beach, surrounded by more businesses, with more frequent bus service.

I am a current nursing student attending LBCC. The nursing school at the campus is very challenging but it is a great program. Before I started school at LBCC, I wish I knew how underresourced the campus is because often times, there is not sufficient resources offered for tutoring, lab time and assistance looking for work or scholarships. The staff in the various departments are very helpful and do their best to meet student's needs and support the student when the student is facing challenges in their academic career. I took many classes in the life sciences department and the professors are very helpful. My favorite instructor in the department is Dr. Marlom Jones. He went out of his way to explain the material to me. For incoming students, I would ask that you stay motivated and ask for as much help as possible from the staff when you need it.

Academics

As stated previously, I am a student in the nursing department. Our classes and program is very challenging and the workload is great. We are a class of about 55 students and our program has a high drop out rate because it is very challenging. We are required to understand and apply to the clinical setting a large amount of information with very little time to fully understand or process.

Campus Facilities & Safety

The campus atmosphere is very friendly. The staff are very helpful and in general have a great interest in seeing that the students do well at LBCC. The science computer labs are under resourced and understaffed. The parking situation has gotten much better because we have a new structue at the Liberal Arts campus of LBCC. I am uncertain about campus safety and often don't feel safe going the women's bathroom by myself, especially at night time, because there have been 2 rapes over the last few years of female students.

I'm a nursing student taking classes in a very competitive field. I work full time and I can only take classes at night. I would appreciate it if the administration offered more night classes for the sciences that are neccessary for the program that I hope to be accepted into. I've had some knowledgable instructors and some that were very challenging. What i think i like that most is the sympathy and understanding that is offered by the teachers I've encountered. They understand how crucial time is when you are an adult student working full time.

Academics

the class size always starts out packed because folks need those classes, but that large group usually drops drastically after the first exam. The professors know this so they are willing to allow/permit more add ons to the class.

Campus Facilities & Safety

The campus is surprisingly clean. Parking is great if you take evening classes. You can park in the staff parking as long as it after 5pm! The cafeteria is pretty good also. The tables are always clean and the food is both delicious and nutrutious

I like the flexibility of classes and the schedule at Long Beach City College. I have taken courses in the morning, afternoon, and evening which have all worked out well for me and my growing family. Without the ability to choose the time of day that I attend school I would not have been successful.

Academics

The class sizes at Long Beach City College are perfect in my opinion. In the past I have attended schools, enrolled in classes, paid for them, them had to sit in the hall in order to take notes. The classes were over impacted which made me resentful. This scenario has never happened at LBCC. The class sizes have always been acceptable.

Campus Facilities & Safety

Our campus safety is exceptional. We are located near the Sheriff's department who always makes themselves visible. The presence of the sheriff seems to keep the crime on campus to a minimum which I greatly appreciate. While taking my night courses I feel safe!

Long Beach City College is one of the most desirable in southern california for its liberal arts campus. It is one of the most beautiful campuses with many resources available to students to help with their school needs. This campus has amazing qualities that students can benefit from; their staff are polite and very helpful. The phone lines are not the best to get answers but their online services may answer all your questions which I find amazing because you don't have to deal with nonsense, you get answers to your questions immediately by going on their website and looking for your answers.

Academics

Long Beach City College has an amazingly wide variety of classes available to students. These courses and programs range from the basics of education to the most specific as culinary arts, human biology, etc... The class sizes are not bad and they get smaller as the semester goes on. Workload depends on the course and the instructor; math, english, and reading are the courses I have found having the most work.

Campus Facilities & Safety

Long Beach City College is made up of two campuses, the Liberal Arts Campus and the Pacific Coast Campus. The Liberal Arts Campus is the most desired campus for its beautiful atmosphere, their greenery, and their variety of services. The PCC campus is being beutified as is the LAC campus. Both campuses are under construction at the moment but yet they still have their great services available such as career centers, computer labs, and libraries. These campuses will bring you a new perspective about college life.

I love this school because there is so much diversity on both PCC and LAC campus's. All the staff, ranging from librarians to instructors have the same overall attitude to just be as helpful as possible.

Academics

I took anatomy, microbiology, and physiology for my pre requisites into the nursing program. I worked very hard, and was able to get into the RN program on my first try. I can't say the same for a lot of students. But I guarantee the reason I am doing so well in the program is because the instructors in my sciences were so helpful, and really made sure I understood the material before moving onto another subject.

Campus Facilities & Safety

They just built a parking structure so that is helpful. However, there is a down side. NO CAMERAS! I had my car stolen in daylight prior to the the parking structure and no one saw a thing! After more cars were stolen, police patrol the parking lots more thoroughly now, which makes me feel more safe leaving my car in the structure.

If you just need to fill some prerequisites, LBCC is fine. However, if I had a choice I would have gone to a different school. Teachers here are subpar, class choice dwindling. Student body; pathetic.

Academics

The programs are nothing special, some of the teachers care about what they do, a lot of them do not. Out of the 15 classes that I have taken at LBCC, I would say that I was only happy with 25% of them .

Campus Facilities & Safety

Campus facilities are decent, clean, accessible, and fairly safe with on campus police presence. There are quite a few computer labs, all up to date and clean, and the tutors are friendly and knowledgable.

I wish I had a better idea of who I needed to speak to during my intial enrollment. Taking my classes in the proper order would have shortened my graduation date.I love meeting people and have had great opportunities to do so. There's a wonderful new library and bookstore.

Academics

Most classes have been fairly easy to follow,I have had times when I felt overwelmed with my homework because I'm a single mom and at times my 7 year old needs help sometimes also. The school has also been very helpful in offereing and array of tutoring programs when I've had a struggles. The professors go out of their way to be avialible to meet with student when necessary.

Campus Facilities & Safety

Campus remains to be a pretty peaceful place, I can always go there for peaceful study time. Campus was really easy to get around because the campus is not so big. A new parking structure has improved parking to the point that I can always find parking.

Long Beach City College (LBCC) is a good school. Although there have been plenty of budget cuts recently, they're still trying their best to provide students with a quality education. Since I'll be transferring to a California State University (CSU) in the fall of this year, I feel confident that LBCC has given me the proper tools needed to succeed at a four-year university. What stands out the most are the academic counselors. Speaking to a counselor allowed me to view my future in a different way. I was so set on one path that I was unable to see other paths that were just as good. For example, I wanted transfer to USC straight from LBCC. My counselor advised that a CSU was a cheaper alternative and that I could transfer to USC for graduate school instead. She also said USC was only one option. I could apply to many different graduate schools for science within California, even San Francisco! That meeting changed everything for me. The big lesson I learned in college is that you have to speak to the staff. They're experienced and well-suited to assist students in finding the right path. For me, just speaking to a counselor made my world seem larger. LBCC is alright with me.

Academics

School is fairly easy as long as you look at it that way. If you put in the effort to study and understand the material, you will do well. That's all there is to it. The workload is fair and the class sizes aren't too large because LBCC sets strict seats limits. The professors are very helpful and the school has multiple Success Centers for any students that need tutoring. Long Beach City has plenty of resources that are very simple to access. It's very easy to succeed here.

Campus Facilities & Safety

Bunnies! The campus is overrun with bunny rabbits and my school does their best to take care of the situation by caring for them, feeding them and putting them up for adoption to students and the general public. In my eyes, that shows the humanity of the campus and lends to the atmosphere of "community". The staff is always willing to assist students with any of their needs, the campus facilities such as the computer labs are abundant and clean, parking is great since LBCC built a new parking structure recently, and the campus is completely safe since campus police are always nearby. As far as organizations, I was recently invited to join the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and I'm very excited about it. Students must be invited to join the society and display their hard work with a high GPA. There are also plenty of other organizations to join, like the Viking Volunteers, that are dedicated to serving the community.

The teachers I had at this school never went at a fast pace if the class was confused. They created learning activities that made difficult material understandable. What I like the most about this school is the friendly staff and professors. They show interest in your majors and always asked students what made them choose that major. Also, they try to accomadate school work to help students bring up their grades if they had imporant personal problems that affected their time in school.

Academics

I learned that psychology was my major after I went through alot of life obstacles that built stress towards my school llife. Everything I learned from my psychology class was applied to my personal life and it helped me become a better student. I now am almost acheiving a 4.0 and improving each semester. Many of the professors at this school will always remind students how many hours they should study to remember the materials they covered during a lecture. Also, workload was heavy because it was meant for my good. It helped out alot because I felt a better understanding towards topics (math formulas) that made it difficult to comprehend the first few tries.

Campus Facilities & Safety

The facilitiese are getting rebuilt and by far is looking really amazing. Campus safety is gettiing closer to a five star because there are more securities patroling around. Also there is extra parking if LBCC parking structure gets full. Its a little far from the campus buildings, but it is a good warm- up walk. This college computer labs are never to filled, so there is always one available to use. I appreciate that it closes at 10 p.m. for those who needs the extra time to type up a paper or do some online researching.

I'm enjoying my time at lbcc. I love the opportunities given to transfer students such as myself that help transition into the four year university go smoothly and actually have success. I take advantage of every opportunity given to me to visit a university or ask questions about transferring. Last spring through the transfer program, I got to visit the universities in Northern California such as UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, San Francisco State, and Standford. It was one of the best experiences of my life and it helped me alot in my decision making.

Academics

My favorite thing overall about lbcc is the programs offered on campus. I was lucky enough to be a part of the puente program which provided me with an amazing English instructor and a counceler who both helped me in school and inspired me to want to transfer to UCLA. Aside from Puente, i think the class sizes are suitable to be able to learn and the work given is a fair amount. I like how each professor that i've had emphasized on the fact that homework isn't just a task but it's to help us learn.

Campus Facilities & Safety

I'm very satisfied with the campus overall. They have done a great job at accommodating the club i'm in (Simple Truth) in letting us have our Bible talks on campus and make it a suitable environment for other clubs as well. The parking was a problem when I first began attending lbcc but with the new parking structure it was made parking much easier for students, staff, and anyone who visits campus. The school is playing a big part in making sure we have a great learning environment and are building many new structures. My favorite ones so far are the new library and the art building.

i am a second year student and when i was first enrolled i was faced with a lot of misunderstanding about how the process went but by asking help by several other students that i was able to relax and follow the process. I was overwhelmed in the beginning but i can say that i look forward for the next semester. I was enrolled in a english class and the teacher,Mr. Hasio was the best teacher ever. If anyone is interested in enrolling in college i would recommend the long beach city college. It has been a great experience and i would encourage anyone to enroll and do something with your life

Academics

my first semester i enrolled into a program that was designed for the first time student. this program helped me with interacting with other students and with the teacher. It was called the STAR program. This program covered the basic courses needed in the first semester to any new comer. I have found that this school will help with anything they can or find someone who can. I am grateful for the oppurtunity to attend this school and i am very proud of being a part of the school.

Campus Facilities & Safety

the school is going through a new face lift so there were many problems with the construction going on but school was not effected by the inconvience. The new portions of the school look so fresh and it is exciting to be part of the new school and all that is offered. the facitities here are so great with trying to help with whatever is needed. Everyone here are so nice and respected.

Overall

My overall experience at LBCC was inspirational. The most memorable part were the Instructors! They actually care for the students and wish them all the success. My advice is to pick the classes that will not overwhelm you and just do the best you can. Also take the time to use all the resources on campus. Trust me they do make all the difference.

Academics

The general education classes were somewhat of a pain, but they need to completed to move on with life. The instructors are there to help. So ASK for the help and the semester will go by faster then you think. The workload is what you make of it. If you leave everything for the last minute it is not going to be easy. Plan the assignments and do a little each day. Oh and reviewing the mater for a test/ exam is not the same thing as doing the homework or studying the material... The class sizes are anywhere from 30 to 50 students. And the instructor knows who you are so do not be "that student" who claims to know it all. Do your part and you will pass the class. Remember this is not High School. One last thing, to get respect, you have to give it. Hang in there, you will graduate and move on with life.

Campus Facilities & Safety

The campus atmosphere is simple. It is well rounded. You will have those who read while sitting on the grass or bench, those who just go to "pick up", and those who are into sports, and then there is everyone else. People will get along with you so just be respectful... Departments are separated and they do not know the business of other departments so do not ask the English Department if the Math Department will be easy to get into... The Centers for tutoring are extremely helpful so use them. The computer lab is there for school work., so do not spend all your time on FB, when you are suppose to be writing a paper or finishing up a project. As for Organizations, they are great to be a part of( it helps to distract your mind from your studies at least for an hour or so.) Parking sucks. so get there early! Campus safety is great, I felt safe there at all times of the day. If you need assistance, there is a Police Officer near by. Have fun, but be careful because you are not the only one on campus. All other resources on campus are great so take advantage of them. When you leave, believe me, you will miss those resources.
