Reviews for Gonzaga University
I attended GU for three semesters beginning in the Fall of 1986 as a freshman. I decided on GU because of their excellent radio and television program and an awesome campus visit my dad took me on summer between my junior and senior year of high school. I had an awesome freshman year surviving Spokane's long winter with no problems, making new friends and whooping it up with a buddy from high school who also enrolled at GU. It's a beautiful campus when not covered in snow and ice. Spokane is a big city if you're moving there from Central Washington but quickly became a remote outpost if you're from a city like San Francisco or Los Angeles. By mid winter in my sophomore year, the novelty of GU and Spokane had worn completely off. Even their great communications program and a Bull Dogs winning season couldn't keep me engaged.
In the late 80's, GU was still committed to small class sizes. I think the largest ratio I experienced was about 20/1. Professors were solid, particularly those in the broadcast communications department. Workloads seemed appropriate. The resources provided students were excellent.
I really did have a great freshman year but students considering GU should be certain Spokane can keep you interested if you intend to spend 4 years in the community. At the time, the campus had very strict policies regarding everything after hours or what some would refer to as the 'fun' things for a typical college freshman. I'm saying that after 12 years of catholic education prior to GU. My roommate and I ended up on double secret probation. God would have to intervene if you were receiving financial aid. The secret in our case was probably because we were both paying full tuition. GU ended up not being a good fit for a San Francisco / Bay Area native (at least in my case). Spokane can often get below zero temps in the winter and they can drag on into April and May. If you're not used to that, the campus and Spokane can feel very small. College is supposed to be more than just coursework. You have to be more adventurous than I was at 18/19 to make GU work. Neither my buddy Gerald, two girl friends nor myself made it through our second year.
