Overall, I love ISU. The campus is beautiful, Ames is a very nice town, the area is very safe, the professors and advisers truly want to help you, and many of the students are nice. I knew when I first visited the campus in December of my senior year in high school that I wanted to attend this university and after seeing all that the school had to offer and speaking with my future advisor, my parents were also certain that this was the university I should attend. My first week here I attended Destination Iowa State; a program to help incoming students learn the campus, meet other new students, and learn to love the university. During those three days I became good friends with the people on my floor, I learned various school chants and cheers, where all my classes are, and how to behave as an Iowa State student. Those first few days of my year here at ISU were by far the best I have had.

Academics

ISU has various class sizes, from four hundred person lectures to small classes of twenty students. Almost all of the professors genuinely want to help you learn and are enthusiastic and knowledgable about their courses. Most professors also have a teaching assistant that can answer questions and help students. Many of the professors here also conduct research, publish books or studies, and talk publicly about their work. The workload depends on the class but it is manageable. There are also many different resources for academic help such as tutors and resource centers.

College Life

ISU has a very fun and energetic atmosphere. There are hundreds of clubs and people are always starting their own. The campus is extremely safe. Athletic events are a big deal here and students and the community are very supportive. There are always activities on the weekends to partake in.

Everyone that I've met working for the school is incredibly friendly and helpful. When I ask for assistance, they are there with a smile. The campus is big but easy to navigate. There are so many activities and clubs to participate in, it's hard to be bored.

Academics

I've had a wide variety of classes, from lectures of 300 people to small 18 people classrooms, but all have been thorough learning environments. Even in lectures, they try to interact with students and make sure everyone is understanding the material.

College Life

Very friendly, very active campus. My roommates are all involved in so many things, we rarely run into each other in our apartment. There are different facilities to exercise in or just pick up a game of basketball. All facilities are equipped with adequate or above average equipment for whatever you're doing, playing sports, doing research, whatever.

At the age of 13 I already knew that I would be attending Iowa State University because it was the only school close to home that offered my major. I have always had an interest in fashion and when I was just about to start high school, I knew that it was something I wanted to go into. I only applied for Iowa State, not even looking at other schools, and was lucky enough to be accepted that very same week. In one word to describe this school would be amazing. Iowa State is such a beautiful campus to live on and the environment I am surrounded by helped me feel right at home once I moved onto campus. I really enjoyed the first week on campus because the university really focused on making students feel comfortable at school by having special events such as pep rallies, and the annual Destination Iowa State. My advice for future students is to really understand the school bus system. I don't know how many times I got lost, but I know it was way to many to count. One time I ended up on the other side of town, but luckily there was another bus right after that to take me back. Another tip about taking the bus, is do not pull out the campus map because that just screams freshman!! I learned that the hard way.

Academics

The academics here at Iowa State are better then I could have imagined. Most of the professors at Iowa State are determined to help all of their students to succeed. I love being able to email or go to their office and ask for help. Due to the fact that I am in a smaller major, most of my classes contain around 30 people, but if I take a general math, or english class, most lectures will contain over 250 people. I don't mind having large lectures because professors seem to go more in depth about chapter assignments and readings. The only down side to large lectures is that fact that it can be intimidating if you would like to ask a question or answer one with 250 people staring at you. Hopefully I can get over that fear and build up the confidence to ask, but being able to ask outside of class and hear back soon is still as effective. The workload, like they said in high school, is challenging and a lot of work. At times I find my self reading chapters for 5 hours, but due to the fact that I am a fashion major, most of my class assignments are projects. Projects aren't bad and I enjoy doing them, but to put in the best effort the projects need to be started as soon as possible.

College Life

I knew at the beginning of the year that I wasn't going to join a sorority due to the fact I don't like the idea of other students judging if you are good enough to join their house. Instead I choose to be an individual and just be me which is why I joined TREND magazine. The first semester I was a committee member with TREND, but second semester I applied for a directors position. I am currently TREND's Fashion On-Location Assistant Director. Each week I put in about four hours looking at locations for the photo shoot, clothing to use, makeup, etc. It is a lot of outside work, but it is something I really enjoy doing. I am also a model in Iowa States annual Fashion Show. I had to audition to become a model and I am thrilled to have received this opportunity. Most majors can find some kind of club or activity that they enjoy doing or that is connected with your major, if not you can go to the board and request to add a new club. Besides clubs I really enjoy going to all sporting events. I may be a girl in fashion, but I have to be at all sporting events like football, basketball, and wrestling. Its fun being in the student section cheering the athletes on and being with friends. I really recommend going even if you aren't a big sports fan. It is a great way to meet people and to have fun!

Overall I really like it here at Iowa State University. The people are all nice and friendly and open to meeting new friends, and the teachers are all equally as kind and accessible. Iowa State has a multitude of traditions, events and activities that can keep you running around and having fun for as long as you are here, whether it's for three years or six. There are any number of different groups that you can join from frats to choirs to intramural sports. I really enjoy ISU and am looking forward to the next few years here.

Academics

To start with, the professors are all very nice and are very focused on helping you to succeed in what ever way they can. The work load for most classes is very manageable when one isn't taking too many classes. The work load is helped by the fact that most classes are are small in size, the only overly large ones are base level courses such as Calculus 1, but even then, my teacher was extremely approachable and always willing to help and answer questions. These class sizes, great teachers and manageable workloads all add up to great programs across the board, in everything from engineering to performing and fine arts.

College Life

While I can't really speak to the condition of the clubs, everything else is fantastic. There are always people willing to hang out and there are also places to go where people will leave you to your business. There is great athletic spirit here at ISU as well as great academics. If you experience nothing else at Iowa State, you need to make sure that you experience Hilton magic at a home basketball game, whether you go to ISU or not. Nothing else can beat it. As for the weekends, I use them to rest up from busy weeks but there are plenty of things to do then as well from free blockbuster movies to Greek land to volunteer opportunities.

Look for multiple majors of interest to you when looking for a school. Look at academics, social and living conditions as well as proximity to home. Beautiful campus year round with great faculty who love what they do, and very nice people. Overall, this college fits everything besides the big city.

Academics

The classes are great, teachers and nice and helpful. Workload just depends on your credit load. Classes range from 20-200. You get out of it what you put in. If you need help, there are so many places you can go to get help such as a tutor or an extra study session with the teacher's assistants or the teachers themselves in their office hours.

College Life

Greek life is huge. It is very worth it though. ISU greek life creates leaders and pushes excellent academics and involvement. Many organizations are available, you will never be bored. Weekends are a blast!

The campus is a beautiful place. There are so many trees and nature is incorporated all over campus. There are so many facilities and services to take advantage of; study abroad, academic success, financial aid, student services, tech help, greek life, and many leadership opportunities with over 800 clubs. The staff is always friendly and helpful, the professors are well informed and teach very well. There's plenty to do and get a part of on Iowa State campus.

Academics

There is a very large variety of classes and programs that you can take during your time at Iowa State. The professors are great, they want to help and teach, and they're happy to meet with you whenever you need help. They know you have other classes and other responsibilities, and the workload is never overwhelming, but still enough to help you learn. The class sizes range from very large, to rather small, depending on what class it is.

College Life

The atmosphere at Iowa State is always friendly. People love to get involved with clubs, organizations, and sororities/fraternities. There are over 800 clubs, so there is literally something for everybody. The athletics get tons of support from the students, win or lose. Everyone likes to come together to support Iowa State, no matter what the event.

Iowa State has so many great things to offer. The learning environment at Iowa State is unlike anything else, there’s no doubt in my mind that it has been a challenge. The school offers many resources for any student who is willing to see them out. When I first decided to attend Iowa State University I considered doing formal recruitment for the Greek community but I had never really thought of myself as a sorority type. I have met some of my best friends and I also joined a house that I couldn’t be happier in. Iowa State gives you these opportunities that let you branch out and be who you want to be.

Academics

Iowa State offers many things for their students, the learning experience demands a lot from their students. Iowa State offers tutors, help sessions, study tips, workshops for writing and most teachers assistants offer one on one help no matter what you are having trouble with. If you keep in mind the reason you are at Iowa State you will be able to balance between school work, work, and friends.

College Life

Iowa State is an amazing campus by offering over 800 clubs and other opportunities for students to be involved. The athletic programs are phenomenal and the fans are even better. I feel safe when ever I am walking on campus, people are always on campus talking with one another or laying on campus and doing homework. Overall I am proud to wear the colors of cardinal and gold and say I attend Iowa State University.

The best thing I can tell prospective students who are considering Iowa State University (or really any post- secondary institution) is to just embrace the college experience. Be an active participant in sports, academics, and campus events. With many of these options offered on a daily basis, it's sort of hard not to become involved, and trust me, the college experience is much more enjoyable and memorable by participating in activities. Last semester, I was a member of Iowa State University's varsity marching band, I became Academic Chair of my house in Friley Hall, and I enjoyed campus- wide activities such as Cyclone Cinema and intramural sports. I don't regret a thing, and I've met many amazing people along the way.

Academics

It's sort of implied that the workload in college is both harder and larger than that of high school, however, the professors here do a fantastic job of minimizing stress by fully preparing students for the course work during class and offering a large amount of office hours to accommodate extra questions. Class sizes range from 20- 300 depending on if it's a lecture or regular class, and there are many options to choose from.

College Life

This campus is simply amazing by offering over 800 clubs and other opportunities for students to get involved. The athletics programs are phenomenal and the fans are even better because of their unwavering loyalty. Socially, Iowa State University is among the best by encouraging its students to become involved with one another and by offering unique team- based courses that provide a safe atmosphere to make friends.

Iowa State University strives to provide students with a great education and also looks to get students a job right out of college. The university definitely succeeds at this goal. Many students arriving here get internships immediately which is a huge reason to choose Iowa State. On the negative side, be wary if you are looking for a plethora of activities to fill up your weekends off campus because the university covers most of Ames and most of the interesting places are right on campus. The campus though really has a lot going on and offers everything you need to do, so the lack of a bustling surrounding community is barely noticed.

Academics

ISU really focuses on the engineering department with a great deal of money and effort put into constantly changing services and programs to adapt to student's needs. The facilities and resources at Iowa State match any other state university in the nation. If in engineering, expect a significant workload of math and science courses. A lot is expected of Iowa State engineering students and therefore classes get exceedingly difficult as time goes on. Class sizes vary based on the class, but for the first few semesters expect large, lecture classes with 80+ students. Specialized classes and courses through the honors program, though, offer significantly smaller class sizes.

College Life

Iowa State has an absolutely incredible amount of clubs and organizations. There are plenty of both serious and recreational clubs relating to topics you love and even some you never knew existed until you try them. Weekly activities are always going on with concerts, shows, and just big parties happening almost every night of the week. If you're looking for a school with thriving athletics programs, Iowa State is the way to go with a football and basketball team rising to the top of the ranks and unmatched fan support in every sport. Cyclones are really proud of their sports teams!

Overall, I love Iowa State! It is everything I wanted and more. I like that there is always so much to do. Whether its a club, intramural activities, sports, or a free movie on campus there is always something to do. My tip for prospective students is to do a college visit. You will know the moment you step on campus if this is the place for you!

Academics

There are some large lecture classes. I am in physics right now and it is just packed. However, this isn't a big deal because of recitation classes, supplemental instruction, and office hours provided. The workload is not difficult if you plan your time. I am very pleased with ISU academics.

College Life

I feel very safe on campus. I am active in clubs and organizations and want to be even more involved. If there is a problem with the college life here at ISU, its that there is too much to do and not enough time to do it all!
