Reviews for Florida International University
I am an FIU alum, having graduated with a masters in Special Education in 1999. I returned to enter a grad program in 2012. In the program in which I was enrolled, students were told we had to pay an additional $230 per credit ($14,000 for the program), with no explanation what it was for. We were told if we didn't pay it our program would be shut down. I inquired about the fee and found out it was never assessed in a legally and procedurally correct manner. It was never brought to the Board of Trustees or the Board of Governors (supposedly it was initiated in 2005). In July 2013 I submitted my complaint to the BOG (which oversees all public universities in FL). They had decided to back FIU and make the charges legit as of June 2013, even though the overcharging was hidden from them for 8 years. I can only assume the alternative would have been worse: having to reimburse numerous past and present students in the amount of $14,000 - $40,000 each. Other programs under the same college charged an alternate tuition (rather than a fee, as in my program). I believe that the extra money charged in those programs were also not procedurally or legally assessed. I see this as an institutional abuse of power, taking financial advantage of students who are in no position to complain.
Academics in my department - Communication Sciences and Disorders - were not adequate, save for 2 professors. One of the central professors taught several required courses. In each course, the only assessment were 3 exams (no other work assigned). Many questions on each exam were invalid in that they required knowledge not accessible through the course. Other questions were poorly worded and difficult to understand. If a student failed a course (B- was failing in all courses), he/she had to repay and retake it. Failing the same course twice (or any 2 courses) was grounds for termination from the program. The majority of students elected to cheat on this professor's exams, circulating exams obtained when the course was offered online (he never revised his exams). Students terminated from the program would lose everything: all tuition and money invested, all work done, and all time and work spent in 4 or 5 practica. A very unfortunate situation, and no indication that anyone cared about the students.
Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Assembly is sometimes punished by police action. Look up FIU 7 Arrests.
