About Central School of Practical Nursing, Norfolk

To become part of an interactive learning environment that is dedicated to developing the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for a career in nursing at Norfolk Public School, the Central School of Practical Nursing in Norfolk, Virginia, may be the place for you.

To be considered eligible for enrollment, applicants must have earned a high school diploma and maintained an average GPA of at least 2.25. Additional admissions requirements include three letters of reference, successful completion of the Test of Essential Academic Skills entrance exam and a personal interview.

The school meets with its advisory panel twice a year to update and further develop the nursing program. Some members on the panel are representatives from Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center, Norfolk State University and the Lake Taylor Transitional Hospital.

The academics offered at the school include two levels of Practical Nursing instruction. Level 1 introduces you to nursing theory and integrates laboratory work into the curriculum so that you can be prepared for the last class’s clinical component. Upon completion of the nine-month level 1 program, students will be eligible to take the certified nursing assistant examination.

Level 2, another nine-month program, consists of advanced training and work experience to prepare for the National Council of Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses.

Students who demonstrate need may be eligible to receive financial aid through federal Pell grants and tuition vouchers.
