University of Missouri-Kansas City From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

The University of Missouri–Kansas City (often referred to as UMKC) is an institution of higher learning located in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. Its main campus is in Kansas City's Rockhill neighborhood east of the Country Club Plaza. It is a part of the University of Missouri System.

History

Lincoln and Lee University

The school has its roots in the Lincoln and Lee University movement first put forth by the Methodist Church and its Bishop Ernest Lynn Waldorf in the 1920s. The proposed university (which was to honor Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee) was to be built on the Missouri-Kansas border at 75th and State Line Road, where the Battle of Westport (the largest battle west of the Mississippi River during the American Civil War) took place. The centerpiece of the school was to be a National Memorial marking the tomb of an unknown Union soldier and unknown Confederate soldier. Proponents of the school said it would be a location "where North met South and East met West."

As the Methodists started having problems piecing together the necessary property, other civic leaders including J.C. Nichols began pushing to create a cultural center on either side of Brush Creek, just east of the Country Club Plaza. According to this plan the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and Kansas City Art Institute would be built north of Brush Creek around the estate of The Kansas City Star publisher William Rockhill Nelson and a private nonsectarian University of Kansas City (initially proposed as a junior college) would be built south of the creek. In addition, a hospital would be constructed around the estate of Kansas City Journal-Post publisher Walter S. Dickey.

In 1930, after the Methodists had brought the Kansas City Dental School into their fold, the two plans were merged. The new school was to be called "Lincoln and Lee, the University of Kansas City." and plans were underway to develop it into a four-year school.

The most competitive programs are business and pharmacy, otherwise the UM system schools are designed to educate large numbers of people, so they are not as a rule difficult to get into PROVIDED you have completed your qualifications. UMSL and UMKC both will insist on remedial classes if your preparation is deficient in any area. Mizzou and Rolla probably would tell you to wait a year and take community college courses before reapplying.

Wide variety of instructors - both native and foreign. It seems that the labs are generally taught by Graduate Teaching Assistants with a professor usually watching and explaining things here and there. Most instructors seem fairly lenient and are willing to work with students to guarantee success. I don't live on campus, so I'm not sure what that's like. But I know there are various events throughout the week that are sponsored by student government and various student organizations. There's not a wide variety of Greek organizations, but at least we have some. Tuition is somewhere around undergrads is $216 per credit hour (for in state/KC area) and $542 for out-of-state, and will probably be raised next fall. Residence hall rates vary depending on which hall you're in and how many people in a room. You can pay anywhere from $3500-9500. There are two halls, Oak Steet and Cherry Street - Oak is the newer one. Not sure if you're from the KC area, but close to the campus is a very nice shopping/dining district - The Plaza. If you're looking for a mall, Ward Parkway is 10min away, Indepedence Center is 15-20min away, and Oak Park is about 20-30min away. Westport is an arts/bar district is like 5min away. Girls...Well, umm. There's a wide spectrum. That's all I'm going to say about that. It's a commuter school. About 14,000 students I think. 600-800 live on campus last time I heard. It's a small campus as well, which is good if you don't like to walk.
