Kingsborough Community College, part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system, is a community college in Brooklyn, New York. The campus is located at the eastern end of the Manhattan Beach peninsula. The 71-acre (283,000 m²) campus overlooks Sheepshead Bay, Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

The college was founded in 1963. It opened in 1964 with 468 students and 39 faculty members. It now serves more than 30,000 students annually and offers both credit and non-credit courses. Since its opening, the college has served over half a million students.

In the late nineteenth century, the Oriental and the Manhattan Beach Hotels, built to compete with the major resorts of Newport, Rhode Island, occupied the area where the current campus now sits. Subsequently, a United States Coast Guard station occupied the land. During World War II, the station became a training center for the United States Maritime Service. Military buildings were initially rehabilitated for classes. In 1968 construction was begun of 8 "temporary buildings." Five years later, the construction was completed.

The campus is now a modern one, overlooking the three bodies of water, but it still has its own beach and a new Rainbow Bandshell at which thousands of people attend concerts under the stars during the summer months.

Most of the college was built under the 28-year leadership of president Leon M. Goldstein, who created many innovative programs at the college. The high school and the Performing Arts center, as well as a playground, are named for him. The current president of the college is Regina S. Peruggi, the former president of Marymount Manhattan College and president of the Central Park Conservancy. The college serves students from more than 162 nations, who speak over 95 different languages.

The college continues the tradition of offering concerts and services to the community with concerts scheduled for this summer in Latin music, jazz, pop music, doo wop and other musical genres. The college also hosts an author series, and a Homecoming Day for its alumni in September of each year. The college's radio station WKRB FM will be celebrating it 30th Anniversary in May 2008.

College Advice

My question pretty much says it all, I had a huge breakdown in college and just quit performing, which led to a below 2.0 gpa, I'm ready for my second attempt and to transfer however many of my credits that I can, which I know will be anywhere from 1/2 to 3/4 of them which I'm fine with, I'm looking at CUNY Hunter College right now to complete my bachelors finally, checked the site and they say I need an above 2.0, think if I was upfront with the admissions office I could maybe get in on an academic probation? Any help would be greately greately appreciated.

i can almost guarantee you hunter won't accept you. i attend cuny john jay and we'll although you may have a better chance there, your chances are still slim. i know laguardia, kingsborough, and other community colleges aren't your first option, but if you take the maximum amount of classes and possibly even summer/winter, you'll gpa will be over a 2.0 in no time. I know some people in admissions at my school, I'll ask and see what your chances are if you want. hit me up if you do.
