The University of Mary (abbreviated U-Mary, U of M) is a four-year Catholic university near Bismarck, North Dakota.
The university is the largest degree granting institution in Bismarck. It also operates accelerated degree programs at satellite locations in North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Kansas, and Missouri.
The University of Mary was founded in 1955 by the Sisters of St. Benedict of Annunciation Monastery as a two-year school (the same sisters also established St. Alexius Medical Center). The school incorporated as Mary College, a four-year college, in 1959. The school moved to its own, current campus in 1968. Accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in 1969, it changed its name to the University of Mary in 1986. The University conferred its first doctorate, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, in 2006.
The University of Mary is a rural campus located about four miles south of Bismarck and sits on a hill overlooking the "Capital City." The campus includes ten different buildings, with an eleventh on the way.
The Harold Schafer Leadership Center is home to an optional business leadership program that the University offers. The upper floor usually holds conferences and some meetings while the lower floor is home to two computer labs. In fall of 2008, this will become a starting out point for more classrooms as part of the Gary Tharaldson School of Business.
The Benedictine Center for Servant Leadership is one of the oldest buildings on campus since it previously served as part of a library and a priory for the Sisters. It primarily houses the University's business office including admissions, alumni, and financials among others. It is also home to the smaller of two campus cafeterias and a theater.
Boniface Riverview Residence is primarily a residence for Sisters that work at U-Mary or St. Alexius Medical Center. The lowest level of the building houses the Theology and Business departments and classrooms.
