School Description

Provided by Wilkes-Barre Area Vocational Technical School of Practical Nursing

The faculty of the Licensed Practical Nursing Program of the W-B AVTS is dedicated to the preparation of the practical nurse. The department’s goal is to graduate a knowledgeable nurse capable of providing safe, effective and competent patient care with direct supervision of the registered nurse, medical doctor or dentist. We believe that the practical nurse education is based on a complementary relationship between clinical experience and classroom studies. Didactic information progresses from the simple to the complex and is closely correlated to scheduled clinical experiences.

The Practical Nursing Program offers you the opportunity for an exciting and good paying career. The requirements for admission to the Practical Nursing Program are a high school diploma or a GED, passing the entrance exam and your desire to make a difference. You will be taught all the essential information you need to succeed in this program and pass the National Council licensing exam when you complete.

The Practical Nursing Program of the Wilkes-Barre Area Vocational-Technical School is a full-time day program, Monday through Friday, which prepares students to become Licensed Practical Nurses. The Program is fully approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing and The National League for Nursing. The Program spans fifteen (15) months – twelve (12) months of academic instruction, with a three (3) month summer recess.

The Practical Nursing Program consists of two (2) enrollments per year, one (1) in September and the second in March. The Program consists of four (4) Levels. If enrolled in the September class, you will complete Levels I, II, and III between September and June. Classes resume in late August, after summer recess, and Level IV is completed between August and December. Graduation is conducted in December.

More than 2,800 students have graduated from the Practical Nursing Program. These graduates have proudly represented the practical nursing program in our community by serving in a variety of healthcare settings. Currently, the Practical Nursing Program is rated as one of the finest entry-level nursing programs in the community, and is approved by the PA State Board of Nursing and fully accredited by the National League for Nursing.
