From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Lake Area Technical Institute is a technical institute in the northeast region of South Dakota. Located in Watertown, SD, the campus lies on of land, which is home to ten buildings that are completely occupied with the latest technology.

In 1965, the founding fathers of technical education in South Dakota voted unanimously to organize the state's first technical school in Watertown, and soon after more would follow in Mitchell, Sioux Falls and Rapid City. Lake Area Tech may have started with one program and 16 students, but today the school has over 1300 full-time and part-time students, who can choose from 25 programs of study. Available programs range from agri-business to cosmetology and from dental assisting and nursing to welding technology. The student-to-teacher ratio is 15:1, which allows students to receive personal attention from experienced instructors. Students can receive their degree or diploma in 9-22 months and there is no out-of-state tuition. Also, students who have previous college or high school classes may be given credit for some courses, allowing students more time for their studies and an opportunity to save money.

Lake Area Technical Institute is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission, which is a member of the North Central Association. A number of the institute's programs have earned their own accreditation status as well. Over the previous 40 years, Lake Area Tech has also received several state and national honors. Even more impressive are the school's placement rates. Lake Area Tech consistently places over 90% of its graduates in their field of training. Currently, Lake Area Tech has 15,268 alumni.

Energy Technology, Energy Operations, and Med/Fire/Rescue are the latest programs Lake Area Tecnical Institute has developed, and Practical Nursing and Diesel Technology are the institution's largest programs. In the fall of 2008 Lake Area Tech began the construction of Phase 1 of a four phase campus expansion. Currently, a new addition to house the Energy Technology and Energy Operations programs is being built and will be ready for classes August, 2009. Phase I also includes a new addition which doubles the amount of lab space for LATI's Diesel Technology program, which has an enrollment of over 100 students. The Diesel addition will be completed by January, 2010. Phase 2 of the campus expansion is a new Automotive Technology Building, with construction slated to begin summer, 2009.
