Indiana Wesleyan University - Marion School Description

From 1920 to 1988, Marion College operated as a developing liberal arts institution with growing programs, offering Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. A Master of Arts in Theology was begun in 1924 and offered continuously until 1950. Master’s degree programs were initiated again in 1979 in Ministerial Education and Community Health Nursing. Master’s degree programs were begun in Business in 1988. That same year the name of the institution was changed to Indiana Wesleyan University, reflecting an influence well beyond the city of Marion and across the state, its connection with The Wesleyan Church and Christian higher education, and the development of increasing numbers of graduate programs. Meanwhile, master’s degrees in Primary Care Nursing and Counseling were added in 1994 and 1995, respectively.

Indiana Wesleyan University is a Christ-centered academic community committed to changing the world by developing students in character, scholarship and leadership.

Wesleyans believe in one God, who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the Savior of all
persons who put their faith in Him alone for eternal life. We believe those who receive
new life in Christ are called to be holy in character and conduct, and can only live this
way by being filled with the Lord’s Spirit. We believe in the Bible and seek to establish
our faith and actions on its teachings. We believe God wants people everywhere to know
Him and that the purpose of the church is to tell the world about Christ through its
worship, witness, and loving deeds.

Our traditional campus is located in Marion, Ind. which is one hour north of Indianapolis and one hour south of Fort Wayne, just off Interstate 69.

The campus has seen many new construction projects recently due to record enrollment in each of the last 13 years. Fifteen major building projects have been undertaken during the past decade, and the end is not yet in sight.

Sure, there are plenty of entertainment options like the movie theater or a game of racquetball in our award-winning rec building, but why not join a club and have fun while building life experience (and your résumé). With more than 30 student organizations, there are plenty of options to give your passions a boost.

So you’ve covered your interests, how about the best interests of others? Be a servant leader on a short-term mission trip. Students have gone to Chicago and New Orleans and as far as Sri Lanka, China, Honduras, New Zealand, Uganda and Zambia to name a few. But you don’t have to get a passport and a series of shots to serve the Lord. You can work right in our own backyard. Grant County offers lots of local ways to get involved.

So that’s our story. What’s yours? Does IWU sound like the kind of stage you’d like to perform on? If yes, or even just a maybe, why not take a tour and decide for yourself?

The University offers various liberal arts (including 87 undergraduate majors) and professional educational programs leading to the Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Education and Master of Business Administration degrees, along with a doctoral program in Organizational Leadership. In addition, a new Master of Divinity degree program will be offered in the fall of 2009.

History

The University mission states: "Indiana Wesleyan University is a Christ-centered academic community committed to changing the world by developing students in character, scholarship, and leadership." IWU's original campus, well recognized in Indiana for teacher education and a college of business, was known first as Marion Normal College (1890-1912) and then reopened as Marion Normal Institute (1912-1918).

In 1918 the Marion Normal Institute relocated to Muncie, Indiana, and merged with the Indiana Normal Institute to form what would eventually become known as Ball State University. Because the Indiana Conference of The Wesleyan Methodist Church operated the Fairmount Bible School south of Marion, a group of local citizens asked them to move to the vacant property and open a normal school in Marion. So from 1918–1919 the conference raised $100,000 to endow the school, moved the Fairmount Bible School to Marion, and added a new teacher education program to become Marion College. The actual year of incorporation was 1919; however, the first classes were not offered until the fall of 1920, which became the official year of inception.

Question: Has anyone attended Indiana Wesleyan University?

I am obtaining my Assciates Degree in Business, then possibly a Bachelor's Degree in Business with Indiana Wesleyan University. I am also thinking going thru their Master's Degree in Teaching. Has anyone been thru this? If so when? Any other information that would be helpful.....

I teach with someone who got their Master's degree through Indiana Wesleyan. They attended classes on Saturdays for 18 months and received their degree after that time. They spent each Friday night at school doing work on line for the classes then spent Saturday in class. It was a stressful time since she had three small children, but it was worth it to finish the degree so quickly.

I did their on-line Master of Science in Management program and I loved it. I won't kid you, it is expensive (most on-line or accelerated programs are). I had great professors and the campus staff was always very helpful. Some courses required more work than others, but I still think I got as good an education as going part-time to a traditional campus (IWU has several campuses so you can mix and match with on-line) and in my case, did it in about 1/2 the time (18 months). I highly recommend it. Thanks for asking!
