NewSchool of Architecture and Design

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

NewSchool of Architecture and Design (NSAD) is a private educational institution located in downtown San Diego offering:

  • Bachelor of Architecture (B Arch)
  • Master of Architecture (M Arch.)

The school also offers non-professional degrees:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Architecture
  • Master of Science in Architecture
  • Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communication

History

The late Richard Welsh founded Newschool of Architecture in 1980. His vision was to provide a professional education in architecture culminating in the Bachelor of Architecture program.

In 1988, the school was relocated from a small industrial building in Chula Vista, California to central downtown San Diego. In 1989, Bislin Education Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Futures in Education, Inc, purchased the school. The Associate of Arts was added in 1990; Master of Architecture in 1994; and Master of Science in Architecture in 1996-97. In January 2001, ForeFront Education Inc. acquired the school and changed its name to NewSchool of Architecture & Design.

Initially, the NewSchool evening class structure was developed to give students the opportunity to attend classes at night because, for many, employment was necessary in order to pay tuition. Formerly, NewSchool did not participate in federal financial aid programs. Upon becoming institutionally accredited in 1991 and eligible for federal financial aid programs, the fiscal need for evening classes lessened; but, by this time, a tradition had been established. Many in mid-career had chosen to change vocations and were attracted to the program. Consequently, it became clear that California needed an afternoon/evening architectural program. Students and faculty attracted to NewSchool support this fact.

In the summer of 2008, Laureate Education acquired NewSchool from Forefront Education, giving the school a vast outlook towards the future.
