El Dorado has been home to Butler Community College since it was founded in 1927. The then El Dorado Junior College was originally housed within the town's Junior High School. Today the college is located at the southwest corner of Haverhill and Towanda. The El Dorado campus is home to 256 students living on campus.

Butler County Community College exists to develop responsible, involved lifelong learners and to contribute to the vitality of the community it serves.

Student Life at Butler Community College is dedicated to providing co-curricular programs and opportunities that allow students to interact with students, faculty and staff. The Butler experience is not complete without Student Life and we strive to offer as many programs and services as possible that will assist you to be successful in your college and lifelong endeavors. The many areas that exsist within Student Life are focused on providing fun activities and programs for social interaction and engagement, living and learning experiences, leadership opportunities, service learning initiatives, academic support services, and personal support and counseling.

Butler Community College is an accredited 2-year community college located in El Dorado, Kansas, United States. Founded in 1927, it was originally named Butler County Community College, as El Dorado is the Butler County seat, but it was renamed in recent years.

Statistics

Butler is a fairly large community college, with an enrollment of 8,365 (as of 2007), and on-campus dormitories to house 345 students (most are commuters). The school president since 1995 has been Jackie Vietti, Ph.D. The school is accredited with the Higher Learning Commission, the North Central Assoc. of Colleges, the National League of Nursing, and the Kansas State Board of Nursing. Faculty to student ratio is 1/17. There are a number of branch campuses throughout the area, in Andover, Rose Hill, McConnell, Marion, Council Grove, and a number of distance-learning sites in high schools.

Athletics

Their school mascot is the grizzly bear, colors are purple and gold, and sports teams include cross country, football, basketball (men and women), track, women's soccer, volleyball, baseball, and softball, as well as a spirit squad.

Butler has won 10 NJCAA national championships, including six in football (1981, 1998, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2008). Butler also has won national titles in men's basketball (1953), men's cross country (1970, 1995), women's cross country (2002).

The Grizzlies finished third in the 2008 NATYCAA standings, which award points to each sports team based on their finish at national competition. During the 2007-08 school year, Butler won a national championship in football, finished second nationally in women's cross country and eighth in men's cross country. Both the men's and women's indoor track and field teams finished third nationally and the men's and women's outdoor track and field teams both finished fourth. The women's softball team also finished in the top 10 of the NJCAA World Series for the second consecutive year.
