That's a big conern for everyone sending a child off to college this week, isn't it? Truth is, the college campus is one of the safer places your daughter could be. You can go to the US Department of Education website and hunt around for the exact statistics--every university and college has to file federal reports now on how many violent crimes happen on campus--but there are many, many more potentially dangerous situations than living in the dorm. A large degree of your daughter's safety will depend on her own conduct. Will she stay away from parties where there are lots of strangers and alcohol is flowing freely (perhaps laced with rohypnol)? Will she call upon the campus security or escort service if she needs to walk to a distant campus location after a night class? Will she seek amusements at the seamist dive in town or at the nearest place of worship for her faith--or at on-campus films, seminars, concerts, and sporting events? Can't protect them forever, and sometimes our best efforts can't overcome really bad luck--as was the case with all those VT students and faculty. But with a little foreknowledge and consistent common sense, the odds are that she'll be fine.
I am a junior and i currently have a 2.85 gpa, and i am working my butt of to get a 3.0. Also on my psats i had a combined 1460. I am considering some type of law major or phyc. I am involved in school, i am in cheerleading, campus ministry, peer leadership, outreach, and lasrosse. And i am Lebanese, which is in the Middle East if that helps me get in lol. Would I be able to get in?

Hofstra isn't that hard to get into, I think you'll get in. Your junior year grades are the most important on your transcript so if you get those up you'll be in good in shape. You're activities sound very good to so that will definitely help, as will your ethnicity. Is your psat score on the 1600 or 2400 scales. If its out of 1600 thats excellent, but if it's out of 2400 try to get your scores up when you take the real sat. I think your chances of getting into Hofstra are pretty good though.
