Our mission is to produce leaders capable of critical thinking and sound analysis, to produce leaders who possess uncompromising character and to produce leaders able to meet challenging physical demands.
Cadet life is characterized through NMMI’s military system and is intended to foster in each cadet punctuality, order, discipline, courtesy, respect for authority, self-reliance, initiative, and strength of character.
Cadets live each day within a military framework: they wear the cadet uniform, live in barracks-style dormitories, and eat their meals in a dining facility.
The cadet day is strictly regimented. It is each cadet’s responsibility to pay close attention to detail in order to manage his or her available time to ensure completion of required academic, military, physical training, and Corps responsibilities.
The NMMI campus is a beautiful oasis nestled in the heart of Roswell. The 300 acre campus has 21 major buildings, parade field, practice and play fields, an 18 hole golf course and is designated a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.
The campus building master plan was originally designed by brothers Isaac and William Rupp in 1908. The architectural style is a variation of Gothic Revival called Modified Gothic, Military Gothic or Scottish Castle. The buildings are all constructed out of unique Kansas buff brick and sport the Rapp brothers trademark octagonal turrets.
NMMI has several garden and plaza areas with statues and memorials honoring the history of the school and those who gave their lives as the ultimate sacrifice to their country.
New Mexico Military Institute
From Wikipedia, The Free EncyclopediaNew Mexico Military Institute ('NMMI) is a state-supported educational institution located in Roswell, New Mexico, United States. NMMI includes a four year high school and a two year junior college. Founded in 1891 by former Confederate Col. Robert S. Goss as the Goss Military Institute, and inspired by Virginia Military Institute, it is now one of five Military Junior Colleges in the United States.
NMMI first admitted women as cadets in 1977, although some women did attend as day students in the early years of the school. It is the only state-supported co-educational college preparatory military boarding high school (grades 9-12)and junior college in the United States.
It typically has about 980 cadets, 95 percent of whom go on to four-year schools; about 100 cadets each year go to one of the five major United States Service academies.
The school's motto is "Duty, Honor, and Achievement" The school's teams are the Broncos (Jr. College) and the Colts (High School). The school's colors are red and black. One of NMMI's nicknames is "The West Point of the West."
NMMI Today
New Mexico Military Institute provides a unique "Leadership Laboratory", where 6th Class (9th Grade High School Equivalent) through 1st Class (College Sophomore) Cadets all interact as members of the Corps. The military school structure is even more unique in the modern era, in that all cadets live in the Troop Barracks, with all classes, meals, and physical training occurring "On Post" in a controlled and safe environment. New Cadets are first taught how to follow by their Old Cadet Cadre, and are mentored in the "servant leadership" style of responsible and honorable actions. Instead of "power and privilege" being the goal of cadet leaders, the overall status of the Corps is paramount.
The NMMI Leadership Model is built around a balance of Academics, Leadership, and Physical Development in relation to every cadet enrolled. With the passing of years the Institute has seen many changes, but the maxim "Duty, Honor and Achievement" still holds true. School publications proclaim that NMMI is "preparing tomorrow's leaders today" and the fact that the school continues to produce leaders fit for military command as well as future captains of industry is testament to the school's success.

Question: Has anyone here attended New Mexico Military Institute?I just recently got accepted and will be a freshman in high school next year. What is the first year really like? Are you glad you went? Were you homesick?8 months ago
Best AnswerI attended there.... Your first two semesters will be the worst after that you will adjust. Just don't take anything personally and you will be fine. |
Question: Is New Mexico Military Institute a good school?how is it looked at overall and does it offer a good education10 months ago
Best AnswerNMMI is very well respected as a military boarding secondary school and as a military junior college. It is also a tremendous bargain even for out of state. It is the top recipient of the federal service academy foundation prep students. If you are asking if NMMI is a good school as compared to Princeton, MIT, Berkeley or U of Chicago, then you are comparing apples and oranges. There are no Nobel Prize or Fields Medal winners at NMMI, but I don't think this has any effect on whether NMMI is effective in its mission. The classes are small to very small, usually less 15 students so there can be more personal attention to a student's needs. Almost the entire graduating class continues on to college. Good Luck! |
