Rutgers University - Newark School Description

With more than 50,000 students on campuses in Camden, Newark, and New Brunswick, Rutgers is one of the nation’s major public institutions of higher education. Chartered in 1766, Rutgers has a unique history as a colonial college, a land-grant institution, and a state university. The university’s 27 degree-granting units offer majors in more than 100 fields, with thousands of courses covering the full range of human experience.

Rutgers University in Newark has a long and proud tradition of providing a first-rate education to students of modest means, to first-generation college attendees, and to students of diverse racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. Our diverse student body, relatively small classes, the educational opportunities of Newark and nearby New York City, and the university’s tradition of academic excellence have attracted a growing student body, which has increased by 1500 students in less than a decade. Once a strictly commuter institution, over twelve hundred students now live on campus, and building additional student residences is one of our highest priorities. Our faculty holds undergraduate students to rigorous standards, and offers them numerous opportunities to undertake original research. As the Rutgers-Newark enrollments grow, we will continue to insure that we remain accessible to large numbers of first-generation college students.

Well I personally go to Rutgers University and I know that Rutgers Newark has a very high reputation for its criminal justice program. on the other hand kean university is a great school for education I don't know much about that program but if education is what you want to then I would recommend it. Now I am taking a poly sci class now and the professor are very good and many of my friends are poly sci majors so i think that in thise terms Rutgers Newark would be your best solution. =) Let me know what your decision is

Question: I'm considering transferring from the University of Toledo to either Seton Hall or Rutgers-Newark?

I am considering transferring from the University of Toledo to either Seton Hall or Rutgers-Newark. I will be majoring in Psychology/Pre-Med. Which school has the best psychology program? Which school has the best overall campus life experience?

Best Answer

I can't say much for Seton Hall since I've never been there, nor do I know much about it. I'm a Rutgers student however, so I may be able to answer some of your questions about Rutgers-Newark. R-NW has a strong pre-med program, Rutgers as a whole is a large research university, which has great access to medical research opportunities and local hospitals. The vast numbers of alumni usually reach far into the local communities, making things like finding med work much easier. Psychology of course, is mostly research-oriented, and there is no better place to be for research work than a University that is completely dedicated and funded to do just that. Overall campus life is good - students are very diverse and open, there are a large number of extracurriculars to join - which I would highly suggest doing, especially in the fields you're looking at. They can help connect you to alum and older students to mentor you, etc. There are a number of psych societies, and future doctor associations. If you need more information, feel free to contact me! Good luck!

I attend Rutgers now (first year). It's an OK school. I wanted to leave after about a month because it seemed like there wasn't anything to do on campus. There isn't much activities, or at least they don't announce them. I'm used to it now, there are some stuff to do and clubs to join. I wouldn't recommend living on campus. The dorms are small. I live in the new student housing building for all students attending school in the area (i.e. Rutgers, NJIT, Essex County, Montclair etc) It's called University Centre. The food is HORRIBLE. Eat at NJIT or other places near by. Alot of people complain that Newark is fulled with crime but with so many colleges around, campus police are everywhere, not to mention Newark police. I'm not sure about you major department but I'm a theater major and it's an ok department. I really think the only reason why I'm still here is because I'm from here. If you plain on living off campus and don't care about joining clubs and experiencing a life on a "college campus" I would recommend this school, if not go to New Brunswick. Newark really isn't a campus but more like buildings scattered around downtown. Hope that helps.
