University of Central Florida

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

The University of Central Florida (commonly referred to as UCF) is a university located in Orlando, Florida. UCF is the largest undergraduate school in the state of Florida, the second largest school-including graduate programs, and is the sixth-largest university in the nation.

UCF is a member institution of the State University System of Florida. It was founded in 1963 as Florida Technological University with the goal of providing highly trained personnel to support the Kennedy Space Center, located only to the east, and to this day maintains a satellite campus at the Space Center. In 1978 the school was renamed the University of Central Florida as its academic scope had expanded to encompass all academic fields. In 1990, the University of Central Florida founded the Space Education and Research Center and is a member of the NASA Space grant colleges.

As of 2007, total enrollment consists of a 49,000 student body seeking bachelor's degrees through doctorates, as well as certificates and specialist degrees. The university is organized into twelve colleges providing nearly 100 separate courses of study with the majority of the population located at the main campus, approximately east of downtown Orlando and south of Daytona Beach. Since its rapid growth starting in the late 1990s UCF has expanded its influence throughout Florida and now consists of twelve satellite campuses in eastern central Florida. The University of Central Florida is listed in “The Best 361 Colleges: 2006 Edition” by The Princeton Review. The Princeton Review’s recognition comes as the academic quality of UCF students continues to rise. In the 2007 edition of US News, it is ranked as a Tier 3 National University. In the Fall of 2006, UCF's admission rate declined drastically from 61% of prospective students admitted to only 46%, as a result of more and more students applying to the university each year. Freshmen admitted in Fall 2007 posted average SAT scores of 1217, ACT scores of 26.1 and weighted high school GPAs of 3.72. UCF has been very successful in recruiting National Merit Scholars and is one of the Top 50 schools in the country by enrollment with 43 scholars. According to a report released by the university in 2008, UCF is second only to the University of Florida in National Merit Scholar enrollment in the state of Florida.

I talked to a person who goes to UCF, and he said UCF was ranked 3rd in the nation for best business schools. However, when I did some research, according to business week, UCF isnt found on the list of top 50 undergraduate business schools. Does anyone know anything about the business program at UCF?

It's a decent program but it is definitely not ranked 3rd in the nation. They are ranked in the top 5 in the nation for their Sport Business Management program by the Wall Street Journal. http://www.bus.ucf.edu/pages/cgi-bin/site/site.cgi?page=/about/admin_facts.htx So if you want to become a sports agent then that is the place you probably want to go. As for a regular business degree program, I would have to say the top three in Florida are UF, FSU and Miami
I live in Columbus, OH and I want to go to a school called The University of Central Flordia, which is in Flordia of course, withput paying all the extra Out of State Fees. you have to have legal residence in the state for more than 1 year, to obtain in-state tuition. This means a house, apartment, or other legal dwelling, other than a dormitory.
UCF - University of Central Florida i'm transferring credits from two schools. i was going to retake one of my classes from the school that i'm at now. but it's all full. so i was going to take another class with the school. but i'm afraid UCF won't accept it (they're picky about what they accept from what i hear). how do i find out? will they tell me over the phone? also, does anyone know if they do online classes?

Edit: UCF does offer online classes, but availability would have to be verified. Your particular major may not have many online classes offered. Most gen ed classes are offered online, but just keep in mind that those go fast! I work for UCF. Any passing, non remedial credit will transfer into the university. Whether it transfers to your major is up to the college of your major. Call us and we'll be able to get more information. If we know the course and what college you're transferring from, then we would be able to guide you further. Our phone number (Office of Undergraduate Admissions) is 407-823-3000. Ask to speak with someone regarding transfer credit. Best wishes.
Ok I am going to be clear, I did terrible in High School, family troubles, a friend dying and what not but I realize that it is my fault and I take the full responsibility! Anyway My high school GPA was 3.2 I just graduated with 07 class, I am not going to make the same mistake again! I have decided to go to a community college for two years first because it is cheaper and my parents need me right now. I got in to University of Central Florida and University of North Florida ( I applied just to see)... I want to be a medical Doctor and, I am wondering what courses I should take for fall this year... this is what I am planning on doing but I don't know if this is right Statistics 3 Credits General Chemistry one (lab) 4 Credits Principles of Biology one (lab) 4 Credits Humanities 3 Credits Composition One 3 Credits I already took college General Psychology and World Civics so I don't have to worry about them.... According to the courses you'll need if you go to University of Central Florida and major in "Biology, PreProfessional" (which is what you'd take if you want to go to Med School and be a doctor), it looks like your plan for the fall semester is great. http://www.catalog.sdes.ucf.edu/current/degree_programs/biology_preprofessional/biology_preprofessional.pdf According to that website, it looks like humanities and composition will be general requirements, and your intro bio, chemistry and statistics will be prerequisites to the program. The pre med program at U of North Florida can be found here: http://www.unf.edu/dept/premed/ Also, according to that webpage your fall schedule is great beause they require english, stats, and humanities, and of course you'll need biology and chemistry classes in your pre-med program. So it looks to me like you have a good plan ahead of you. And keep those websites I mentioned in mind because you can consult them when you make your schedule for the spring. Good luck at college!

I was thinking about attending UCF as well. But, I settled for UNF. But, UCF is definitely not harder than UF. I'd say that it's more difficult than USF ..and on the same level as FSU.
If you could tell me why that would be great

USF is WAY better! I went to UCF and I HATED it! The campus isn't in the best area, the parking is horrible, and the teachers are ALWAYS late for classes! USF teachers seem to care more about the classes they teach, and although it is in Tampa it is in a LOT nicer area then Orlando. USF is more well known and the best place to take certain majors in Florida is at USF. Orlando sucks, and no one should move there if you don't have to!!

Both colleges are good it depends which degree you are seeking. Undergraduate medical is available at the University of South Florida now, but UCF is in the process of having a medical school in the near future. I graduated from UCF and obtained a well rounded education. UCF has an Honors college (Burnette) if you have the grades. I have found that your education is only successful as the amount of time you are willing to invest in it. Check both colleges out online and make an appointment to visit the department in which you are interested in obtaining a degree. Good luck to you.

UCF is the largest university in Central Florida. Rollins College is in Winter Park (a bedroom community of Orlando). It is expensive and elite, but excellent. We have two excellent community colleges in the area. Valencia Community College and Seminole Community College. There are also several satellite centers of schools like Webster University, etc. But if you're looking for the 'college' experience with dorms, sports, etc... they are not the place to go. A little north of us is Stetson University. Another prestigious private college...and in Lakeland is Florida Southern.
