During the 2006-2007 school year, MDCC celebrated 80 years of service to the Mississippi Delta. In 1926, Sunflower Junior College opened and enrolled the first college class on the Moorhead campus and began its rich history, tradition, and commitment to the development of our home region - the Mississippi Delta. From its beginning, preparing students for the future is something that MDCC has always done well. The mission of the school is uniquely oriented to offering outstanding programs, both curricular and extracurricular, at five locations to the citizens of the seven county service district and to meeting the challenges and opportunities presented in the region. Classes at MDCC are still small by standards today in higher education, which allows students to study in an environment where they are known by name instead of a number and where teachers offer individualized attention.
It is the philosophy of Mississippi Delta Community College to provide quality educational
experiences that include intellectual, academic, vocational, technical, social, cultural,
and recreational learning opportunities, at a nominal cost, to those who qualify for the courses
of study and programs offered.
Mississippi Delta Community College is a community college based in Moorhead, Mississippi which is located in Sunflower County. It also offers courses at locations in Drew, Greenville, Greenwood, and Indianola, Mississippi. Its mascot is the Trojan warrior. The college's president is Dr. Larry G. Bailey. It has an enrollment of 3,491 students.
The MDCC campus in Moorhead is home to the Mississippi Delta Law Enforcement Training Academy.
The school was founded in 1926 as Sunflower Junior College, and was fully accredited as a two-year institution in April 1928. The name of the school was changed in 1961 to Mississippi Delta Junior College and in 1989 to Mississippi Delta Community College.
The schools Africa American population of students has rose due to government pale grants being issued in the start of the Fall term. The grants allowed students to attend school who couldn't afford to pay for tuition.
In 1994, Stewart Patridge led the football team to a 12-0 season and a national championship. Patridge would go on to play at the University of Mississippi and win the Conerly Trophy in 1997.
