Question: Which Art School Would You Recommend- between these three?

Between: New York School of Visual Arts (SVA), Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), and Ringling College of Art and Design (RCAD). I'd appreciate well thought out recommendations please! Thank you both! I know the statistics of all three schools, i'm just looking for some outside perspective. I actually plan on majoring in graphic design.

Best Answer

Well, each has its own strengths. SCAD graduates often have an easier time moving into mainstream employment because of SCAD's emphasis on internships and engagement with businesses while still an undergrad. Ringling is more focused on computer animation, and has the best program in that respect. SVA sees SCAD's programs as too commercial and business-oriented, to the detriment of freedom and innovation in design. I happen to think that SVA is the best of the three for the widest variety of fields, including photography, film, and fine arts. And its alumni are certainly the most distinguished.

The school in Savannah is the Main campus, and has the longest established curriculum. The campus in Atlanta is merely an extension of the main campus in Savannah. Check here to look at course offerings: Main Site: http://www.scad.edu/ Atlanta: http://www.scad.edu/scadatlanta/ Good Luck!!!

Question: College Acceptance... Where should I go?

I recently got accepted to Florida State U. and Savannah College of Art and Design, however I really am not sure where I want to go. I originally wanted to major in Interior Design, but now, I'm not so sure. I've limited it to Interior Design and Advertising, but there still so many things I want to do and I'm afraid if I go to SCAD I will only be able to do art, and what if I don't like art as much as I thought I did? With FSU, I know I have a lot of options - but the tricky part is, I know I will be so upset if I miss out on Savannah. I need help narrowing down the pros and cons to figure out where I really want to go. I hope this wasn't too confusing, thankyou for your help! ^.^

You have a couple of options open to you. You could go to SCAD, and if it doesn't work out, transfer. Or you could go to FSU. I know which school would have been the necessary choice for me, but for you? Whole different story. Only you can decide. But I think you're asking the right questions. And you're right - if you go to SCAD, you'll be limited in terms of what jobs are open to you, after you graduate. But you will probably get a more intense artistic experience for going there, and that may be of benefit to your portfolio. But thing is, so long as the program is appropriately accredited, and you do internships or co-ops to get work experience, it's your portfolio that'll get you that first art job - not where you went to school. I was in a similar situation to you. I wanted to major in art, but then I wasn't sure... So I realised that going to a purely art school would not be right for me. I wanted to make sure that I had other types of majors open to me, and also that, if I ended up majoring in art but then decided not to get a job in art, that I'd be employable. That made me chose the non-art school. In the end, I was glad that I went to the non-art school. Not only was I an in-state student, so I saved tuition money (it was a state school), but I also ended up deciding to major in art, but (gasp!) not to work in art when I graduated. I did an internship, and learned that I hated having a boss and clients looking over my shoulder when it came to things artistic. Having a diploma from a more general university helped open doors that having a degree from an art school would not have opened. SCAD is a good art school. It's reputable, and their graduates do get jobs. FSU is also a good school, but of course the experience will be entirely different, because the schools are very different in focus. Have you visited both campuses yet? That may help. I haven't seen FSU, but SCAD is to die for.
