Langston University School Description

Langston University, a land grant historically Black institution
of higher learning, will continue its rich tradition of
developing leaders from a diverse, multi-cultural student
body through excellent teaching, research, community
service and public and private sector partnerships. As
Langston University moves from Excellence to Greatness,
it will be recognized for providing solutions to problems
facing underserved populations in Oklahoma, the nation,
and the world.

The mission of Langston University is to provide excellent
postsecondary education to individuals seeking knowledge,
skills, and attitudes that will enhance the human
condition and promote a world that is peaceful, intellectual,
technologically advanced, and one that fulfills the needs of
nations and individuals alike. Langston University strives
to educate individuals to become the leaders of tomorrow
within their local, national, and global communities.

Langston University is an institution of higher learning located in Langston, Oklahoma, USA. It is the only historically black college in the state, and the westernmost historically black college in the United States. Though located in a rural setting just 10 miles east of Guthrie, Langston also serves an urban mission with University Centers in both Tulsa and Oklahoma City.

History

The school was founded in 1897 and was known as the Oklahoma Colored Agricultural and Normal University. Langston University was created as a result of the second Morrill Act in 1890. The law required states with land-grant colleges (such as Oklahoma State University, then Oklahoma A&M) to either admit African-Americans, or provide an alternative school for them to attend as a condition of receiving federal funds. Langston University is named for John Mercer Langston (1829-1897), civil rights pioneer, first African American member of Congress from Virginia, founder of the Howard University Law School, and American consul-general to Haiti.

Poet Melvin B. Tolson taught at Langston from 1947 until 1964. Tolson was portrayed by Denzel Washington in the film The Great Debaters.

Academics

The University offers associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in a variety of disciplines. It is known as a leader in the field of agricultural research, and hosts the internationally recognized E (Kika) de la Garza Institute for Goat Research. The School currently has an open doors admissions policy. LU has nearly 3,000 students from several states representing a diverse student body at an Oklahoma college.

The university was accredited with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy program in 2005.

Langston University (LU) is a four-year, state-supported, coed, liberal arts institution founded in 1897 as the Colored Agricultural and Normal University, for the purpose of instructing men and women of color in the agricultural, mechanical, and industrial arts. Within a year, following the territorial act that established the college, black settlers determined to provide higher education for their children raised enough money through auctions, bake sales, and donations to purchase the 40 acres of land on which the school was built. The first bachelor’s degree was awarded in 1901. The first president, Dr. Inman E. Page, was the son of a former slave. The school adopted its present name, Langston University, in 1941. After the Civil Rights Act of 1954, many black students in Oklahoma began to attend colleges other than Langston University. President Hale created a ten-year improvement plan to attract both black and white students to the University. Urban centers were instituted in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. These innovations caused an increase in enrollment and a student body that is now approximately 70 percent black and 30 percent white, with students coming from twenty-six states and eighteen foreign countries. In 1987, Langston University began planning its first graduate program. Langston University is Oklahoma’s only historically black college. It serves a double mission as a land grant institution and an urban center for the state. The original mission to carry out agricultural research and cooperative extension continues. Enrollment and programs for urban residents also continue to grow. The University is acclaimed both nationally and internationally for its research projects in the soils, grains, and water of Oklahoma. The American Institute of Goat Research has received international acclaim and has given an added dimension to the cooperative research. Located on 440 acres of land, the University renovated several of its buildings, including the former president’s home (White House); the student union; and the library, the architectural focal point of the campus. ACCREDITATION Langston is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools to award the Associate of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and master’s degrees.
