Saint John Fisher College School Description

St. John Fisher College is a collaborative community dedicated to teaching and learning in a personalized educational environment. The College is guided by its Catholic heritage, as expressed in the motto of its founders, the Basilian Fathers: "teach me goodness, discipline, and knowledge." Through an education rooted in the liberal arts, we prepare individuals for lives of intellectual, professional, and civic integrity, in which diversity and service to others are valued and practiced.

St. John Fisher College is an independent, liberal arts institution in the Catholic tradition of American higher education. The College emphasizes liberal learning for students in traditional academic disciplines, as well as for those in more directly career-oriented fields. The College welcomes qualified students, faculty, and staff regardless of religious or cultural background.

One of the distinctive features of a Fisher education is our learning environment. At Fisher, teaching is what we do best. Here, students find a vibrant and challenging academic environment that sets the tone for lifelong learning. And, the College offers each student access to an outstanding faculty - caring and competent men and women who know how to help students discover their natural abilities and develop their minds.

For almost sixty years, St. John Fisher College and the Rochester community have enjoyed a successful partnership. The College's nearly 19,000 graduates, many of whom hold leadership positions in the Rochester area, have benefited from the opportunity to gain a quality, advanced education based on traditional academic values.

College Advice on Saint John Fisher College

Yahoo

Question: Which is better for a Master's degree, a state or a private college?

My boyfriend is looking at St. John Fisher College (a private college in Rochester, NY) and Central Connecticut State University (a state college in CT). Does anybody know much about these schools or if one would be better than the other? He plans on getting a future Doctorate at an Ivy League school like Yale, so would a degree from St. John Fisher look better on an application? He's also thinking of teaching English in Japan for a year with the JET program if that would look best on an application. Any help would be much appreciated.

Well, usually, and I do mean usually, private schools are seen as 'better' in a sense because they're more exlusive. Therefore, one can say that it's 'harder' to get into one, etc. Whether that's true and whether the admissions officer thinks that way can be argued. I don't know anything particularly about the two schools, but the one with the better program in the field would be the best choice, as what you do in the program is much more important than the actual program. So if the state school has the best program in the area, then that would be the choice. The best way I've noticed to get information about a particular university is to try and talk to students there. They'll give you all the info on the program status, etc. Good luck!
