GBCNV Description

Our mission is to treat everyone we encounter with dignity and respect, Great Basin College provides superior, student-centered, post-secondary education in rural Nevada.

Two generations of students—many of them now citizens and community leaders—have studied at Great Basin College since it opened in 1967. Students of the new millennium, like those who studied at GBC before them, have access to contemporary knowledge in classes and the benefit of instructors who truly cherish the learning process. They will also benefit from an excellent library, the most current computing facilities, and well-equipped laboratories. They participate in a time-honored schedule of traditional classes and in a rich array of short courses presented by active scholars from Nevada and the West.

GBC students choose their courses from mathematics, science, business, and computing; humanities and social sciences; fine arts; career and technical education; health science; and community education. Full-time faculty members, part-time instructors, and support personnel are mentors, friends, and advisers of the 4,700 students who study throughout the academic year at GBC.

Great Basin College boasts a faculty whose backgrounds are as cosmopolitan and wide-reaching as GBC is small and personal. The many full-time and part-time instructors come to GBC from all walks of life, bringing their experiences and varied outlooks to enrich our instructional programs. Over the years, many of our instructors have received regional and national recognition for their efforts.

The main campus of Great Basin College campus has been transformed into a high desert oasis during the last decade. From the site, collegians may look south and see the snow-mantled Ruby Mountains.

The Elko campus provides a theater, outdoor amphitheater, a well-equipped fitness center, and student housing within walking distance for 18 families and approximately 90 individual students.

With a regional population of about 40,000, Elko offers many urban amenities while remaining small enough to foster a sense of community. With the Ruby Mountain and Jarbidge wildnerness areas nearby, the region affords abundant outdoor recreational opportunities.

Home of the Western Folklife Center, Elko hosts the world-famous annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering in mid-winter. And, home to a large Basque commuity, it also hosts a Basque Festival in mid-summer.
