Victor Valley Community College

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Victor Valley College (VVC for short) is a community college located on Bear Valley Road in Victorville, California.

The college was created by a vote of the public in 1960 and the first classes were held in 1961 at the near-by campus of Victor Valley High School. The original student body consisted of only 500 students with a 15-member faculty and staff. The 253 acre campus started construction in 1963 and was opened to students in 1965. The campus has since expanded to include a new technical complex, the Performing Arts Center, a new gymnasium, parking lots and other buildings since then.

The current student population is roughly 11,000, making it one of the larger community colleges in the state. The roughly 600-person staff is made up of mostly part-time instructors, Classified employees of CSEA Chapter 584, and approximately 140 full-time instructors.

Being the main source of community college-level education for the extremely-fast growing Victor Valley (Adelanto, California, Apple Valley, California, Hesperia, California, Victorville, California), the college is experiencing an explosion of student attendance. The student population has increased by over 4,000 since 1995 and is expected to gain an additional 3,000 within the next few years.

The college provides nearly 40 majors, with the most popular being Liberal Arts, Registered Nursing and Business Management. However, a fair-sized number of students use VVC as a spring-board to other colleges and universities, especially in the University of California system and the California State University system.

In 2005, VVC experienced international academic success when its Model United Nations team competed in the world-renowned National Model United Nations conference in New York City, New York and walked away with the top two awards, Outstanding Delegation and Outstanding Position Paper. Over 200 colleges and universities from around the world competed, including the University of London, an all-Japan team, the University of Cambridge and the first all-Iraq team. Many of these teams were composed of graduate students in International Relations and most were fully funded by their schools, while the VVC team was composed of students with a wide-variety of majors and had to do most of the fundraising themselves. Despite these disadvantages, Victor Valley College, representing Bosnia and Herzegovina was one of only seven schools—and the only community college—to walk away with the top two awards.
