Founded in 1937 by the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi, Cardinal Stritch University is comprehensive and coeducational. We serve students of all faiths and ages in four colleges: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Management, College of Education and Leadership, and the Ruth S. Coleman College of Nursing. Stritch is an intimate, dedicated community. Student/faculty ratio is 16 to 1. Stritch faculty and staff are committed to the values of St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226): creating a caring community, sharing compassion for others, reverencing creation, and peacemaking.
Our mission is to transform lives through value-centered education, and we constantly strive to nurture in our students - from the 17-year-olds who join us right out of high school to the many adults who study in our four colleges - a commitment to contributing to their families, businesses, communities and the world we share by becoming ethical decision-makers.
Cardinal Stritch University is a private Roman Catholic university located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was founded in 1937 as St. Clare College by the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi to train nuns as teachers. It was renamed Cardinal Stritch College in 1946 for Samuel Cardinal Stritch of Chicago, who was archbishop of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee during the 1930s. The institution became Cardinal Stritch University in 1997. In 1998, the university expanded to offer its first doctoral program. Cardinal Stritch University is the nation's largest Franciscan University.
The University also has campuses located in Kenosha, Wisconsin; Edina, Minnesota; evening programs in Rochester, Minnesota, and offers multiple Outreach programs throughout Wisconsin.
Cardinal Stritch University's total enrollment for the 2007-2008 is about 6,994. Tuition for the 2008-2009 school year is $20,000, one of the lowest of the 20 independent colleges and universities in Wisconsin. About 82% of Stritch students benefit from scholarships, grants, work-study programs and loans.
The Cardinal Stritch Wolves compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), with their conference association being the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC). Both the Men's and Women's Basketball teams are consistently among the leaders in the CCAC and routinely make it to the NAIA National Basketball Tournament.
Previously Cardinal Stritch was a member of the Lake Michigan Conference and won the Men’s Basketball Championship in 1987. The men's team also was a five time NLCAA Great Lakes District Men's basketball champion in the mid 1980's.
Women’s coach Rich Panella is widely considered one of the best women’s small school coaches in the country.
