Maybe you'll start a charity fundraiser, or play a key role in rehabilitating the Susquehanna River, or come up with something we haven't even thought about. The chances to make a difference are limitless.

At just over 2,200 underclassmen, we have fewer students than many high schools. But it's definitely not a drawback, You'll get access to your professors that you won't find elsewhere.
It's likely that professors will know you by name -- maybe even by your nickname.

Unique to Wilkes University is the surprising breadth of our academic offerings. We feature
a strong assembly of health science disciplines that include numerous medical and health science-related affiliation agreements granting early entry into medical and professional schools. Additionally, Wilkes University offers a 6 year Doctor of Pharmacy degree, as well as a recognized, clinically based Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.

But it certainly isn't just health sciences at Wilkes. We offer state and/or nationally
accredited majors in business and accounting, education, electrical, environmental and mechanical engineering. Further, you will find superior majors in computer sciences, communications, the fine arts, social sciences, humanities and much, much more.

Imagine a professor who encourages you to switch out of the subject she's teaching into a different major because she spots a unique opportunity for you? It's not uncommon at Wilkes. Your professors will start to learn your strengths and tune in to your interests and goals. But you'll never be categorized or pigeon-holed into a situation that's not right for you.

For the average college student, 15 hours a week belong to the classroom, the other 153 belong to you. When you aren't studying, Wilkes helps you make the most of your free time with lots of extracurricular options. Through varsity and intramural sports, concerts, dances and many more activities you can meet new friends, experience new things with old friends, develop leadership skills, and broaden your horizons.

Wilkes offers more than 70 student organizations...that cover a range of tastes and interests -- from our Commuter Council and Multicultural Student Coalition, to a student newspaper, radio station and ski club.

When you're a Wilkes University student, you're a student of life.

We provide a signature undergraduate experience that combines challenging academics, meaningful co-curricular activities, and experiential learning.

Our campus has Ivy-covered mansions, state-of-the-art facilities and standing tall in the center of everything, a bronze statue of the eminent John Wilkes, who occasionally sports some interesting accessories. (Don't ask.)

Our campus is a compact 27 acres (a huge benefit when you have to make the mad dash to 8am class) and is situated in the heart of Wilkes-Barre, PA, a city of 50,000 that's only about 2.5 hours from Manhattan and Philadelphia. You can easily walk to Circles on the Square, where they arguably make the best muffins in America.

Even though Wilkes is located right in the middle of a city, its historic neighborhood -- complete with mature trees and green spaces -- gives our campus a charming feel that blends past and present.

Wilkes University

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Wilkes University is a private, non-denominational American university located in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. It has over 2,200 undergraduates and over 2,200 graduate students (both full and part-time). Wilkes was founded in 1933 as a satellite campus of Bucknell University, and became an independent institution in 1940, naming itself Wilkes College, after English radical politician John Wilkes. The school was granted university status in 1990.

The school mascot, which was suggested by former Dean of Student Affairs Emeritus George F. Ralston, is a Colonel and the official colors are blue and yellow. The campus symbol is a letter "W" known as the "flying W" by students and alumni.

History and Expansion

Wilkes University was first established in 1933 by Bucknell University under the name "Bucknell Junior College" (BUJC) in Wilkes-Barre. BUJC attracted many students who were the first members of their families to benefit from higher education. The Junior College also received support from leading members of the Wilkes-Barre community.

In 1947, Wilkes College was instituted as an independent, nondenominational four-year college, with programs in the arts, sciences, and a number of professional fields as well as numerous extracurricular activities. Wilkes was given university status in 1990.

More recently college programs were significantly expanded. Wilkes College opened the School of Pharmacy in 1996, and in 1999, through a donation from Mrs. Geraldine Nesbitt Orr, the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy at Wilkes University was established.

The Jay S. Sidhu School of Business & Leadership was created in 2004. Students in the university's business program are required to take courses across several schools with the intent to provide an emotional education in addition to the typical business experience.

In 2005, the Henry Student Center was expanded and the University purchased an building in downtown Wilkes-Barre. This building serves as the Wilkes University communications center, housing the registrar, bursar, indoor track and field, and ropes course.
