Student life

Student traditions

A tradition recognized by both undergraduates and faculty at Old Dominion involves the seal of the university located in the middle of the student lawn area, Kaufman Mall. The seal lies in the center of the lawn on the sidewalk. According to superstition, any undergraduate who treads on the seal will not graduate. Many students take care to walk around the seal. Only after a student has graduated and continues course work as a graduate may walk on the seal. Another tradition involves the lion fountain outside of the Webb Center. Popularly a "rite of freshman passage" and a challenge for all students is to climb the fountain undetected onto the back of Big Blue, known as "riding the lion".

Student organizations

Old Dominion University recognizes over 200 student organizations. There are student groups for students with similar majors, professional organizations, honor societies, religious organizations, minority students, and groups for students with common interests as well as a variety of traditional, multicultural, and professional sororities and fraternities. The Student Government Association has direct authority over student organizations.

The Office of Student Activities and Leadership is in charge of matters relating to student activities on campus.

Greek life

Old Dominion has a complex diverse Greek system with fourteen fraternities and eleven sororities.

The ODU web-site lists eight, not four. * Northern Virginia Center * Peninsula Higher Education Center * Roanoke Higher Education Center * Southern Maryland Higher Education Center * Southern Virginia Higher Education Center * Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center * Tri-Cities Center at TCC Portsmouth * Virginia Beach Higher Education Center You can check for the classes they offer at the web-site.

Old Dominion has been named one of the best colleges in the Southeast by the Princeton Review. However, it isn't a very prestigious school, the freshman class' average high school GPA was 3.2, and SAT score was 1080.
i live near Old Dominion University and their sports program call themselves the "monarchs" but there is a lion in their logo? or another example, the University of Alabama are called the "tide" but in their logo there is an elephant?

In the case of ODU, the university was originally founded as a division of WIlliam and Mary -- so the Monarchs involved are British Royalty. The coat of arms for the British royal family has lions on it. And you have to admit that having a kid dressed up as a lion is much better than having him dressed up as a 17th century king. The link below explains theories of why Alabama has an elephant. UNLV basketball had a shark mascot for a while when Tarkanian was their coach. It had to do with playing in "Tark's shark tank." UNLV hasn't been good since he left -- so I don't know if the Rebels still have a shark. I wonder if anyone know why Stanford has a tree as their mascot. The team name is "Cardinal" -- but it stands for the color, not the bird. Yet the tree is green. There are lots of odd things about mascots. Have you ever wondered why the Minnesota Golden Gopher (Bucky) looks more like a chipmonk than a gopher? It is because the woman who designed him had never seen a gopher.
