Moravian College and Moravian Theological Seminary School Description

Moravian truly believes in educating the whole person. It is rooted in our philosophy, which derives from the teachings of the 17th-century Moravian leader John Amos Comenius, known as "the father of modern education." He believed that education should do more than just teach information, but also give students the chance to explore values, build physical well being, and develop a caring and productive way of life.

We know that a lot of learning takes place outside of the formal classroom--in the residence halls, in the field house, in organization meetings. So in all of our student life programs, we want to foster that learning and assist students in positive ways, in ways that will help them grow.

The purpose of a Moravian education is to set you free —from gaps in your knowledge, from limitations in your thinking, from isolation in your world—to lead a fulfilling, successful life. Our educational programs are founded on the ideals of John Amos Comenius, a Moravian leader born in the 16th century, now revered as the "father of modern education."

Our nation's leaders are crying out for a reaffirmation of his principles: a strong basic curriculum, personal attention from skilled teachers, a global perspective, and a vision for the future of students. Moravian College was founded more than 250 years ago on Comenius's principles. We continue to fine-tune his ideals to fulfill the needs of a new age and a new world order. We like to think that we have a special insight into what he had in mind.

For over two centuries men and women exploring God's call have chosen to attend Moravian Theological Seminary, a graduate school that prepares them for vocations that make a difference in the lives of others. Known for combining strong academics with practical experiences, Moravian equips our graduates with a strong pastoral identity, ready to lead and serve in congregational, counseling, and other ministries.

To add to the richness of the learning experience, it is common for our student body to represent at least 14 denominations and other faith traditions. Our programs are rooted in the Moravian faith tradition — centered in Jesus Christ, grounded in Scripture, ecumenical in spirit, committed to community, and focused on missional leadership.

Moravian Seminary is located in Bethlehem, an attractive tree-lined city of 75,000 in the center of the Lehigh Valley community, with a population of more than 600,000. Six nationally-ranked colleges are located in the Lehigh Valley — Moravian College, Lehigh University, Muhlenberg College, Lafayette College, Cedar Crest College, and DeSales University.

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Moravian College & Theological Seminary is a private liberal arts college and Seminary located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, United States, in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania.

History

The College traces its roots to the Bethlehem Female Seminary, which was founded in 1742 as the the first school for young women in the U.S. in Germantown, Pennsylvania. The seminary was created by Benigna, Countess von Zinzendorf the daughter of Count Nikolaus Ludwig Zinzendorf, who was the benefactor of the fledgling Moravian communities in Nazareth and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The Female Seminary was incorporated by the Pennsylvania State Legislature in 1863 and became the woman's college, the Moravian Seminary and College for Women in 1913.

The College also traces its roots to the founding of two boy's schools, established in 1742 and 1743, which merged to become Nazareth Hall in 1759 and was located in the town of Nazareth. Nazareth Hall became, in part, Moravian College & Theological Seminary in 1807, and was later incorporated by the Pennsylvania State Legislature as "Moravian College & Theological Seminary" in 1863. Beginning in 1858 and continuing to 1892, the Seminary and College relocated from Nazareth to a former boys’ school on Church Street in Bethlehem, located on the present site of the Bethlehem City Hall. The men's Moravian College & Theological Seminary thereafter settled in the north end of the City of Behlehem (the present day North Campus) as a result of a donation from the Bethlehem Congregation of the Moravian Church in 1888. The first buildings constructed at North Campus, Comenius Hall and Zinzendorf Hall, were completed in 1892 and joined the property's original brick farmhouse to form the new campus. The farmhouse was later named Hamilton Hall and still exists today.
