The Academy is the wellspring of leadership and character for the United States Coast Guard. In serving the American public, the Academy is recognized as an exemplary institution and valued as a national asset. To earn that recognition and inspire learners, we excel in education, professional and military training, and leadership development.
The United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), located in New London, Connecticut is a U.S. military academy that provides education to future officers of the United States Coast Guard.
Unlike the other Service Academies, admission to the Coast Guard Academy does not require a Congressional nomination. The Academy is regularly cited as being one of the most difficult U.S. college-level institution to gain entrance into. Each year some 400 students are selected from an applicant pool about eight times that size for appointments to the Academy. About 280 of those 400 selectees accept the appointment and report to the USCGA in early July for "swab summer," a basic military training program designed to prepare them for the rigors of their Fourth Class year. Each cadet takes two semesters of classes during the school year and then spends the majority of the summer in military training. After four years of study and training, approximately 175 cadets will graduate with a B.S. degree and be commissioned as Ensigns in the United States Coast Guard, to begin serving their five years of obligatory duty. Around 30% of the Corps of Cadets is female.
While Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy, in 1929 Vice Admiral Harry G. Hamlet composed the Academy's mission statement. All entering cadets must memorize the mission during their first few days of Swab Summer, the indoctrination period for new cadets.
The mission of the United States Coast Guard Academy is to graduate young men and women with sound bodies, stout hearts and alert minds, with a liking for the sea and its lore, and with that high sense of Honor, Loyalty and Obedience which goes with trained initiative and leadership; well-grounded in seamanship, the sciences and the amenities, and strong in the resolve to be worthy of the traditions of commissioned officers in the United States Coast Guard, in the service of their country and humanity.

College Advice |

I'm actually already a sophmore at a very reputiable 4-year university (yes, I know I'll have to start back at the beginning), but I really want to go to the Coast Guard Academy. I've done the website stuff, so if anyone can provide me with personal experiences with either the Academy, or the Coast Guard itself, I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks everyone!

I have the option of attending the Coast Guard Academy, but I was just wondering if the Coast Guard Academy was as well respected and reknown as the other academies. I liked the academy a lot when I visited there, and I have recieved an appointment, but am still unsure of if I am going to attend. Anyone have any thoughts or input?

It's a great academy...but the Coast Guard is not a part of the Department of Defense.

Question:
Which service academy should I go to? (Please answer only if you know what I'm talking about)?
I have 2 appointments-1 to the US Coast Guard Academy and 1 to the US Air Force Academy. The problem is I really like both schools. People have told me to choose based on what career I want and they both have the ones that I want (aviation and intelligence). They both have majors I am interested in. CGA has Civil Engineering with a concentration in Environmental Engineering and AFA has Environmental Engineering. CGA has Government with a concentration in International Affairs and AFA has Foreign Area Studies. The pros of going to the CGA are that it is much closer to home and that it is a smaller school so they have had less problems than the AFA in the past. The pros of going to the AFA include more academic and extracurricular opportunities. I will enclose a list I made comparing the two. Which should I choose to attend?
Thanks so much for everything!
Majors
USAFA-Environmental Engr, For Area Studies
USCGA-CE with Enivron Engr, Gov't with International Relations
Summer Opps
USAFA- 4/c-Basic Cadet Training
3/c-Jump (parachute) or glide training
2/c and 1/c-Leadership opportunities-BCT cadre, flight instructor, etc
USCGA-4/c-Swab Summer (Military Training)
3/c-5 weeks on CGC Eagle/5 weeks on another CGC(Coast Guard Cutter)
2/c-Leadership opportunities-training swabs, helping prospective cadets, serving aboard a CGC
1/c-10 weeks CGC or 5 weeks CG internship/5 weeks CGC
THANKS AGAIN
And I'm not enlisting. I am going to have one of the best educations in the world. When I graduate I'll have a commision as either an Ensign(CG) or a 2nd Lieutenant(AFA) which is higher than what I would be if I enlisted.

Hey- I’m going to be shipping out to the Coast Guard Academy for the class of 2011! Have you visited either of the academies? b/c that was the real deciding factor for me. The Cg has a great program where you follow a cadet around for a day. I'm so stoked that I'm already memorizing the runnign light and going crazy with the pushups and running.
I guess I’m just wondering if letting other people influence your decision on this site is the right thing to do? Anyway, not to creep you out or anything, but I’m going to throw my myspace out there- so feel free to throw it right back at me. It’s myspace.com/sespe7 Hope to hear from you about how your decision and preparations are going!

I am interested in attending the Coast Gaurd Academy next year...but I can't access the admissions page. I try going to www.cga.edu/ but I keep getting error messages when I click on "admissions". Is that just my computer or is CGA having trouble with its server?
To the first guy: you do not need a congressional appiontment for the Coast Guard Academy.
