Overall

The financial aid department is very under staffed and unhelpful. They do not say anything on their web site that Financial aid provided by MJC is only grants. ( Pell grant about 5,000 and maybe 500 a year in other grants) They talk about loans and grants on their financial aid site. There is no loan offers at all in your financial aid package. Financial aid told me that they do not participate in the Stafford loan program that is included in your financial aid through your Fasfa. This is the only college I could find in the area that hurts their students in this way. Most colleges want students to succeed by giving them every opportunity. Yes there will be no loans to pay back , But students have to work full time and only attend school part time so the can pay rent, gas, food and book costs for a semester. Instead of concentrating class and homework, I heard a student complain about not being able to afford gas to school, and he could not afford food next month and was going to go to a food bank. The graduation rate is 65 % and from what I have seen it most likely is from burn out. The estimated cost to attend MJC according to the MJC financial aid web site is 18,312 per year. This covers Room, Board, books and personal expenses. The average Pell grant for a year is 6,000 and with the other grants of 500 each student would have to come up with another 11500. just to survive, And that's living under the poverty level. MJC is discriminating against poor students with families that can not help their children attend school. These students will have to work twice as hard as students that can live at home and have financial support of their families. Modesto is full of poor students who can not afford to travel to Stockton or Merced to attend a school that DOES give every financial opportunity to ensure there students are successful. I think it is very neglectful of MJC to limit their students. I also think that the attendance is so high at MJC because students do not realize that by attending another community college they will have a better finical support to finish their degree in a more timely manner.

Academics

I have attended two other out of state community colleges. One school that was much smaller and another that was the same size and MJC does not even offer half of what even the small JR college offers. And that's really sad. I have wonderful professors at MJC but they are dealing with way over crowded classes and students who have too much on their plates to be successful.

Campus Facilities & Safety

The atmosphere is quite drab. I am an art student and in the art department, there are a few paintings on the walls that are interesting. But so many blank spaces and drabness. The colleges I have always had sculptures and murals, things to inspire students and make them think. MJC seams to want you to come to class and just leave. Artists need other artists to get the juice flowing. The creativity from a group of artists learning from each other can be one of the most incredible experiences for any artist. I do not feel this when being at MJC . Honestly its quite depressing being an artist at this school

Overall

I feel there are many opportunities given here at this college and counselors to help keep you on task to get to your goals. I am looking forward to continuing my education for the next few years and am proud to say I go to MJC.

Academics

The classes have been outlined and put into a format easy for me to stay on track. Teachers and counselors are available to answer any questions I have in regards to the program. I want to continue with the classes provided to earn an AA degree int he Criminal Justice Field and maybe even a couple of business courses in the future to help me have a better understanding so that I can achieve more in the future.

Campus Facilities & Safety

The campus is clean, secure and open. I enjoy going to the student center and meeting new people and hearing about what their goals and desires are. I am a fairly new student but I get help from other teachers, campus security, food service, anyone on campus is kind enough to help when I am unsure. I appreciate everyones willingness to help me when I need it.
