Nestled in the snowy (very snowy) hills of upstate New York, Colgate is a known for its small campus feel, athletic and geographically diverse student body, and that snow I talked about earlier. As a student there you have to be ready for some long winters of isolation and a difficult schedule of intensive classes. Get to know the teachers quickly, you'll be spending some quality time with a lot of them, and it behooves you to know which are good, which are bad, and which are easy.

Academics

Colgate is a small liberal arts college so the programs offered are relatively slim. If you're looking to be an engineer, you should probably look elsewhere. It's difficult to compare professors and workload to other schools without actually attending those other schools but from what I hear, compared to other colleges Colgate professors have more personal connections with students and give out much longer papers. Classes are almost always tiny in comparison with state schools, and be ready to be surrounded by some very opinionated and hard-working students.

College Life

Let's face it: Colgate is populated by a lot of rich white kids who did pretty well on their SATs. This fact leads a student life to caters to this type of student. Expect a large emphasis on Greek life and house parties. Athletics is big, mostly because most students are athletes in some way, but, aside from the annual Colgate vs. Cornell hockey game, I wouldn't call Colgaters an especially sports-rabid fan base. Spring Party Weekend is the biggest social event of the year so if you need to visit campus for a weekend, that's the time to do it. And don't forget to stop by the Jug for a beer and some bad dancing.

I am very proud to say that I attended Colgate for my undergrad education. Although small, most people recognize the name and are impressed by the schools reputation. It has helped me obtain topnotch jobs. The campus is beautiful and even now when I drive down 12B to visit, I get the same feeling of being at home that I did during my 4yrs on campus.

Academics

As an English and Education major, my classes were on average between 15 and 25. Most of my classes were evaluated based on papers, projects and presentations. As a result I enjoy project work that requires/allows me to present to my peers and superiors in both small and large groups. I think this is a relatively unique opinion.

College Life

I look back longingly at my freshman year dorm experience. Many of my closest college friendships were formed in the long corridors of Curtis 3rd floor. As a Varsity Athlete I was often wandering back from the athletic fields late at night and never felt unsafe.

I love the atmospher that Colgate had to offer. It is an amazing school with a gorgeous campus and a very prestigious background. The willingness of the professors to help you succeed is unmatched. Prospective students should know that the weather is probably one of the school's weaknesses, so if you do not like snow and cold weather, Colgate is not the place for you.

Academics

The classes at Colgate definitely helped me prepare for life after college. The class sizes were small; professors made it a point to get to know their students and help them throughout the semester. The workload is manageable but definitely pushes you forward as a student.

College Life

I enjoyed my time at Colgate as a student athelte. I was unable to joing many campus organizations due to my athletic commitment. However, most of my favorite memories of Colgate are with my teammates both on and off the field.

Overall

Overall a WONDERFUL institution. The faculty and staff are wonderful and easily accessible. The institution is very generous and does a good job in supporting students and maintaining contact after graduation. Very grateful for my experience at Colgate.

Academics

Classes sizes vary but are generally pretty small. I was an English major and I had a few classes with as few as 15 students. Regardless of class size, I always felt like I could approach my professors and never felt like any particular class was too big.

College Life

The town does not have much to offer in terms of nightlife (the people in town are very friendly, just not much to do around town), however, the school has tons of extracurricular programs, student organizations and students can generally find something to do.

Overall

Colgate was a top notch institution in so many ways. First, the academic programs were outstanding - top notch faculty and course options. I enjoyed Colgate athletics and greek life and found many social and intellectual outlets outside of the class room. The small size of the school was a real plus as I felt a strong sense of community and belonging.

Academics

Classes were small ranging in a size from 5-50 people depending on the course level. All of the classes were taught by professors (as opposed to TAs) and I knew my professors on a first name basis. The school had an excellent selection of classes and I never had difficult taking the classes I wanted. The work load was managable. Tests were often essay format as opposed to multiple choice. I testing format helped me become a stronger writer and prepared me for my graduate school studies.

College Life

Colgate is a study hard, party hard atmosphere. Greek life was prevalent when I attended, but I understand that the system has died down some since my attendance. I greatly appreciated the cultural activties and groups provided by the school. For a small town, we had a vibrant bar and social scene which consisted of frat parties, apartment parties and bar hopping.

I cannot say enough about Colgate. I really could not imagine a better experience from my undergrad than what I had. I loved being a part of the athletic community and felt an instant connection with anyone who also spent a lot of time in the training room, lifting weights or generally around the athletic facilities.

Academics

Originally, when looking at colleges, I thought I wanted a huge university with lots of school spirit in a more populated area; however, Colgate proved me wrong. It has an incredible amount of school spirit and pride that's shared among anyone with a Colgate connection. I can't imagine having gone anywhere else. My best friends come from Colgate, and I will always cherish those 4 years!

College Life

I was a part of the athletic program and had a phenomenal experience. I always felt safe on campus, and there was always something to do around town or on campus, despite the rural setting. I would strongly recommend Colgate as a well-rounded, supportive and great place to spend one's undergraduate years.

Amazing small town atmosphere, great adminstration and attract very friendly people. Great traditions from Freshman year to senior year! When you come back as alumni you can still connect with current students!

Academics

Very interesting and tough classes. Small classes for the most part and personable teachers. Workload is tough but very managable and playing D1 spots while handling the workload is also manageable!!!

College Life

Everyone is at the bar on Saturday night, and library sunday come lunch time....very supportive of athletics, great overall experience. Campus safety makes the campus very safe and enjoyable experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed all 4 years at Colgate. It is a small school in a small town but it created a great family and community atmosphere. The campus is stunning all year round and the campus facilities are second to none.

Academics

Classes were difficult but professors were always approachable. Colgate offers a variety of majors and minors to suit everyone's needs and interests and integrating one's schedule between 2 majors is not at all impossible.

College Life

Playing sports was great for me during my time on campus. The athlete community was very tight knit and we all supported each other when it was possible. There were always activities going on throughout the campus and finding your own niche will help strengthen the options at the school.
