Academics Rating

Mercyhurst allows a "contract major which is perfect for students looking to study in two or three different areas. This option is allowing me to combine the aspects of music and business into one degree, tailoring my degree requirements to what I think will be best suited for my career path. When I came to Mercyhurst, my original major did not require as many in-class hours. The average student takes 3-4 classes a term. Classes are longer than most schools (about 1.5 hours MWF and about 2 hours and 10 minutes TTH), and because of the trimesters, there are only 10 weeks instead of 15. Classes are pretty intensified, but not too overwhelming because most students do not take many classes at one time. For anyone interested in the music department, we have to take many more classes each term plus rehearsals and performances. The workload is about average for a college, although because it is a small school, the professors get to know the students, become mentors, and therefore do hold high expectations, which (in my opinion) provides for a better education. Class sizes are small--about 50 students maximum in an intro level lecture style class, and much smaller, more intimate classes within the majors themselves.
