Overall

I loved Dartmouth. Coming from a California public school it was a tough transition. It is COLD in New Hampshire about 6 or 7 months a year and most of the students seemed to be from elite New England boarding schools. The academics are hard but not overwhelmingly so. I thought I would ski a lot but coming from the Lake Tahoe area, the mountains in NH and VT just weren't worth the freezing weather. I loved the small community of Hanover and the real all-American Collegiate feel to the campus, no to mention it's absolutely beautiful. As my time at Dartmouth passed, I grew to really love it - I think the small size and the weather lend themselves to very close friendships. Many of my best friends from Dartmouth are still my best friends today.

Academics

I studied Economics. I'm not a math whiz so it was a real challenge. In retrospect, I wish I would've majored in something more interesting and less practical like History or English - both of which are amazing at Dartmouth. Maybe one of my favorite things about the school is that it's all about undergraduate education rather than research and grad schools. The professors are amazing and are really engaged and accessible.

College Life

Dartmouth does an admirable job of bringing in performers and artists to entertain and educate the students and provide alternatives to the greek scene. That said, when I was there, most of the partying and socializing seemed to revolve around heavy beer drinking at frats and sororities. Not that that's a bad thing. Pong rules, always has, always will as far as I can tell. Outside the fraternity scene, there are local restaurants and a movie theater, coffee shops and other places to get together and hang out. Down by the river in the summer, sledding on the golf course in the winter. All in all, I thought it was a really fun place to live and I miss it even now.

It has been 15+ years, so I'm sure that Dartmouth has changed. Dartmouth was a wonderful school for much more than its academics -- the student body, alumni, professors, location, traditions and history make Dartmouth a part of you for the rest of your life.

Academics

Varies by major. Mixture of large, medium and small class sizes. Professors accessible (if you choose). Enjoyed the many classes that I signed up for -- outside my major. Make sure to take advantage of the semester off and take classes abroad. Workload was manageable.

College Life

Great setting for the outdoor enthusiast. Greek life is available to those who choose, but it does not dominate the campus. HIghly recommend the off-campus program and Sophomore Summer is a great bonding experience for the class. The freshman trips are a great way to instroduce students to the school.

Overall

Dartmouth is a phenomenal school for ambitious students who crave a challenge and independence. Some people say it's for kids who like to work hard *and* play hard. And how. Bring your warm winter coat. Fantastic teachers, great students, loads of outdoor activities and some very incredible off-campus programs complete the experience.

Academics

Loved the small classes. Never had a class taught by a TA. Professors are super into their material and very easy to track down outside of class. The school is unique for its trimester system and "D-plan." Everybody spends sophomore summer on campus and then gets a term off elsewhere in their sophomore or junior year. That term off allows you to do an internship or just kick around and have an adventure. The school's off-campus programs abroad and in the U.S. are first-class. People who don't love winter can easily get out of Hanover during those cold months.

College Life

Dartmouth kids tend to be social animals. At least in the 90s. I don't think much has changed. Everyone goes back for reunions. Is there a better sign of class unity and school spirit than that? Athletics teams are top-notch and campus security is great. Some off-campus houses never even had keys for the front doors.

Overall

I wouldn't trade the experience for the world, but it was not what I would call fun. I learned a lot, most of it outside of the classroom. I answered that the school had a great Greek life, because that it what social life was for most of the school. Not because I think Greek life was fun.

Academics

I went to Dartmouth mainly for the debate team. In high school, I guess I sort of figured I should go to college, I guess, but I didn't know anything about colleges---except for the fact that high school debaters from all over the country wanted to go to Dartmouth debate camp. That made it cool to me. Later I found out it was Ivy League, etc.

College Life

The food was incredible, in the several food halls on campus and the many restaurants around town. The students are mostly upper-middle class and ruling class---Dartmouth holds a record for binge-drinking, and that is closely related to the dominance of social life by the Greeks. Oh well.
