With a heavy reliance on industry and shipbuilding, a lot of the jobs in the Newport News area require on-the-job training more than a 4-year degree, however, there is one university in Newport News that offers bachelor’s programs, and that’s Christopher Newport University (not a coincidence).

There are two places in Newport News you can earn an associate’s degree at. The classic community college feel would come from Centura College of Newport News, and if you’re interested in healthcare, Riverside College of Health Careers also has 2-year degree programs.

With 23 miles of coastline on the James River and Hampton Roads Harbor, it’s safe to say that Newport News is a good place to go to school if you like being on the water. If you prefer to stay on land but still like being outside, there are also several hiking trails in the wooded areas outside of the city. For indoor entertainment, Newport News isn’t exactly a hub for concerts and festivals, but there are several meeting places and history galore, as so many ships have been built here.
