If you have fun with your activity you’re much more likely to stick with it through your senior year.

Show colleges you’re a well-rounded student by participating in extracurricular activities.

When you first visited with your guidance counselor, you talked about what kinds of extracurricular activities you should get involved in. Now it’s time to actually sign up for those activities and answer the question: Why are extracurricular activities so important anyway?

Why get involved in extracurricular activities?

Aside from the fact that extracurriculars help you meet new people, form strong bonds with other students, and make you a well-rounded student, they also show colleges that you’re an active student who has the capacity to be a leader.

While colleges aren’t looking for a one-trick pony, they also don’t appreciate students who try a little of everything but never fully commit to one (or two or three) specific extracurriculars.

Colleges are looking for depth of commitment, rather than breadth of commitment. They’d much rather see you be the captain of the water polo team and editor of your school newspaper than see you as a member of 30 different clubs and 15 different sports teams.

Which activities should I choose?

  • Above all, your activities should be ones in which you have a genuine interest and to which you’ll have no problem committing your time and effort.
  • Not all of your activities have to be school-related. Church groups, volunteering opportunities, and community organizations are completely legitimate too.
  • Think about activities you’ll really excel at. Positions of leadership can really stand out to admissions boards.
