Colleges in North Carolina

North Carolina, the Tar Heel State, opened the first public university in the United States - the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The University of North Carolina system encompasses 16 public universities, 58 public community colleges in its community college system, and 36 private universities and colleges, in addition to various training academies, art institutes and proprietary schools. The system also supports several well-known historically black colleges and universities such as North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University, and Winston-Salem State University.

North Carolina University and five of the Universities of North Carolina are ranked by a nationally recognized college review as among the Best Southeastern Colleges and Best Value Colleges. US News & World Report list of America’s Best Colleges has ranked Duke University and Wake Forest University, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill on their list of Top Schools.
