Texas Scholarships

The old adage “everything’s bigger in Texas” certainly applies to the state’s higher education. The opportunities are endless at top-tier research universities like the University of Houston, the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University.

Texas scholarships exist to help Lone Star State residents take advantage of these opportunities. Just as the state features big universities, so too does it offer numerous scholarship programs. These Texas scholarships can help you get through college without loads of debt.

Popular Texas Scholarships

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), which oversees the state’s public universities, sponsors a number of scholarship and grant programs.

The most popular of these is the Toward Excellence, Access, & Success (TEXAS) Grant. This need-based grant is open to all Texas residents who are not convicted felons. The Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership Program (LEAP) Grant also provides financial aid based upon need.

Institutionally sponsored scholarships offer a variety of ways to fund your education. Most Texas colleges reward high levels of academic achievement. For example, Texas A&M University funds the Outstanding Rural Scholar Recognition Program, and the University of Texas – Arlington sponsors the Top 10% Scholarship, for students who graduated in the top 10% of their high school class.

Applying for Texas Scholarships

Some of the scholarships offered by the THECB have more specialized criteria. These grants and scholarships are designed to support professions that are in high demand in Texas, and represent great financial aid opportunities for students in those fields.

The Professional Nursing Scholarship, for example, is a $3,000 grant for nursing students. Similarly, the Fifth-Year Accounting Student Scholarship can get you through your fifth year of schooling.

A more general Texas scholarship to apply for along this line is the Kenneth H. Ashworth Fellowship. Applicants for this award must first be nominated by the dean of their school, and must plan to work in Texas after graduation.
