It’s impossible to rank the best graduate schools overall, as there are many different degree programs within each school, and some have greater strengths than others. As a result, rankings are compiled by examining each degree program within a school. A graduate school that ranks number "1" in one masters degree program, may very well have a lower ranking in another.
US News creates their rankings by surveying thousands of academics and professionals from schools over the period of Fall 2009. Other factors considered are acceptance rate, employment after graduation and average test scores.
Keep in mind that these rankings should be used as a supplement to your graduate school search. Every person's graduate school needs are different, so you should first consider what type of program fits best for you before consulting the ratings.
When it's time for you to choose the best graduate program, other information to look at include admissions requirements, program features, quality of facilities and whether or not you want to attend an online school or a traditional bricks-and mortar school.
