College Plan Timeline:

Your parents will probably want to accompany on a lot of your college visits so don’t forget to include them on the planning process. (Plus, they’re likely the ones footing the bill for these visits.)

Time is running out before application time! Visit your prospective colleges before you submit your application.

Hopefully you were able to visit a couple schools over summer, but if you didn’t have the time, money, or willpower to do so, don’t worry, there’s still opportunity to spend some quality time on campus.

In fact, if there were sufficient time, fall would be a perfect time to visit ALL your prospective schools. Unfortunately, if you want to get the full school experience you’ll need to visit on a school day, which, of course, means missing crucial high school class time. Since your schedule isn’t full of fluff and some of the schools you visit might be states away, you’ll want to carefully consider when you want to visit colleges and how that fits into your high school schedule. And be sure to utilize any long weekends or fall vacation days you might have for visitation days.

Tips for Your College Visits

  • Start with a campus tour so you can get a lay of the land.
  • If possible, visit with students and professors and see if you can sit in on a class or two.
  • Remember you might be on campus only once so schedule any interviews or meetings while you’re visiting.
  • Many colleges allow visiting students to stay overnight in the dorms. If you can, do it. This can give you a sense of social life on campus.
  • After you visit, don’t forget to send thank-you notes to anyone you met with or helped you on your trip.
